if further away than 3km, you can't select the group member (tho he still shows up on radar), but if you have him selected, he will stay selected no matter the distance, well maybe there is a limit, but at 130km away i still had him selected.

AFAIK it has always been like this. We once used it to measure a distance of over 3,000,000 meters.
