Not sure if this is a "bug" proper or just a soon-to-be gone feature, but I can still swap engines between ships. In other words: I can take the heavy engine out of a hornet mk IV and equip it in an EC-88, or any other ship I choose. Since the only difference between many ship models is the engine they come with, I assume I'm not supposed to be able to do this.

Yeah, you're not supposed to be able to. The devs said they're going to take that "feature" out soon. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Yes, enjoy it while it lasts. It's already gone for the next version. Although I can forsee "missions" consisting of mechanics souping up or swapping your engines for a fee.
