Severe, recurrant lag

Nov 23, 2004 Soltis link
There's a problem with consistant lag in this game, which is getting me killed a LOT.

My bandwidth is not being eaten by any P2P apps/spyware/downloads/etc.

My nominal CPU usage ingame is extremely low.

Athlon XP Barton 2500
1024 MB RAM
Geforce FX 5900

It's not a framerate issue, it's not the program overloading the CPU or RAM, and my connection is stable and consistant when connecting to other services.

broadbandreports.com, as well as a numer of other diagnostics, show my connection as working perfectly. My ping to other servers is around 90, and remains that way even if I perform a continuous ping on that server while playing VO.

Basically, I really doubt this is on my end, and it's pissing me the f* off that I can't bot without dying randomly.

Yes I am having similar laggy issues.

At times I am unable to warp to other systems, get server timed out errors and even end up losing my ship.

If you have ZoneAlarm, try playing with it off. For some reason, ZoneAlarm sometimes affects the WGAF (Vendetta's engine) packets. I've heard upwards of 800% improvements in latency with ZoneAlarm off versus on.

I run NOTHING when in VO, except an IM client, a browser, and an IRC client.

My connection is 3000/256, and I rather doubt that those things would present a connection load sufficient to interfere with the VO datastream.

can you ping or traceroute your connection to the game server?
Maybe there's something between you and us that is eating packets occasionally.

In keeping with the scientific method, try it with the browser, IM client, and irc client off.

I've both pinged and tracerouted.

No pings over 188, though my ingame ping was much higher(?), and while a couple nodes between me and VO ping at over 200 occasionally, the actual connection to the VO server appeared stable.

I'll try cutting EVERYTHING off, but I doubt it'll do much. (I think I have tested this already, but I can't verify that well enough to guarantee it)

I'm going to do a continuous ping/traceroute while ingame, with everything closed, and see what happens. I'll do things I know have made me lag die before, and see what the pings do during that timeframe.
