Repair time

Apr 19, 2005 softy2 link
Make it so such that it will take X amount of time to repair your ship in statios/capships, X being proporotional to the ship's damage.

This will at least penalize runners a bit (not that it will stop them.)

Someone said that any amount of waiting would tick people off.
So, there ya go!

Hehe. That's the idea =P.

Holden's tired of people running. repair time would maybe cut down on that a bit. I don't dissagree.

Yes!
I really think we need some punishment (besides monetary) for death/damage.
It's frustrating, and seems unfair that if you get ganged up on and manage to hold your ground, you'll have players that you chased off or even killed back in the fight before it's over.

Yea, but there should be some sort of spiffy animation where it shows your battered ship getting fixed up so you have something to watch while it's going on. But then you also get the choice to switch to a ship that's already in the station. But it'd still make you more careful to not ruin all of them.

I think lots of PvP enthousiasts here realy dislike this idea, but that doesn't realy meen it's a bad idea may even be an idea they might like once integrated. Like Cam said, if your fighting 2 (or more) vs 1, and you mannage to kill one, its good to know that there is only one left to kill, without the worries that his wingman, buddy, whatever, returns in a fresh ship while you are still trying to kill the second one.

Allso, since the steps toward being a RPG are slowly being made, this would contribute to a sence of realism and I even wouldn't mind if ejection pods would be introduced, ejecting you automaticly when your ship gets blown up, and bringing you to the nearest station or your home station at your choice.

I really like this idea, we just need there to be SOME disadvantage to being damaged.

OR, make people pay for repairs.

paying for repairs, I think would hurt PvP quite a bit, cuz I remember several times in Beta when I couldn't pay for repairs, or buy a ship, or get cargo. The mission system does help a bit with that, but paying for repairs still doesn't get away from the fact that people can gang up on one person, and as that one person damages all the attackers, they can leave, repair, and generally return before said player dies. This means that the person in the center doesn't get any kills, and has to face a seemingly endless number of enemies. It's a little frustrating.

But if you have to wait for repairs to finish or get a different ship, things would change. I mean, maybe even if repairs from 0.001% to full health take 5 minutes, things would definitely change. It would require redundant spacecraft to be waiting in nearby stations just in case you get into combat and need repairs, you'd have a ship waiting. But at that, the ship selection process wastes a couple more seconds that could otherwise bring someone back into battle at the crucial moment.

Paying for repairs may to some degree hurt PvP, but would increase commerce and trade.

Money/credits currently mean too little. Charging for repairs won't remedy the meaningless of money, but will help. Perhaps a choice for repairing the ship: 1) a repair charge $$ or 2) a time penalty.

My caveat is this: make sure there is something else to do while your waiting for your ship to be repaired. People won't mind waiting for a ship to be repaired; they WILL mind down-time.

Paying/waiting for repairs would only neccessitate a single duplicate ship to be held in the hangar. The other one would be out an about while the first one is repaired. This means that it would really only hurt newbies who cant afford to waste money on duplicate ships, while experts already using the tactic would just shrug off the fee.

Ergo I think it is a rather bad idea, even if it would add to realism.

Just make them *wait*, even if they have ships in the station. The idea is not realism, the point is to punish people who runs and then returns to battle in 0.1 secs flat.

Help me out here, folks, let's try to make this game more fun ok?

Even for newbies, the repair time would mean that newbies would have to learn how to survive bots for longer before needing to repair. I think that this would probably result in a lot of mentor requests, and some further interaction between the veterans and the newbies.

But it'd be cool to get some shot of your ship in a docking bay with robotic arms repairing and welding your ship back together. Of course, you could always skip past the animation and select a new ship to hop into. It'd be like leaving the repair slip and walking to your new ship.

But as I said, even this process takes 10-20 seconds longer than just clicking the "Exit Station" button.

Of course, if you're going to give "repair time," a "rearm" time might also be a good idea, so you can't spam swarms, leave, get more swarms, and repeat. Maybe a 5 second reload time for each ammo unit or something.

And then, it follows that you're going to need a setting to activate or deactivate the auto-repair function, because maybe you don't want to spend the time repairing and reloading and just want to get on your run.
