The PDA interface and other new stuff.

1. When you set a navpoint, you have a specific way to identify it as a system (travel )navpoint or a sector navpoint. If it's a sector navpoint, how about it takes a little image (150 px x 120 px or so) and stores it client-side?
That's assuming, of course, that the whole in-sector navpoint thing won't be abused by player-built bots. I assume that there would be no autopilot, just an icon or symbol on your HUD that shows up when your navpoint is activated.

2. I think all notes and stuff should be stored client-side, no need to clutter up the server with personal logs and such.

3. However, being able to send navroutes, messages, or clippings from note fields from one pilot to another like a kind of Instant-Messaging system is neat.

4. Copy & Paste would be nice, either solely within VO (as in copying chatlogs from channel 100 to keep for later), or even better, from external programs.

5. Sorting lists is good, yllamana has a good idea with the seconday sorting.

More to come when I have some time.

..in response to myself, I've done some research and in-flight panels DO close on a repress of the key used to open them, EXCEPT when that key is the MMBUTTON :/

..and two more ideas:

-- how about have the PDA (or parts of it) only show for as long as the key is physically pressed? 'twould make it easier to check something quick, or plot a navroute while under fire

-- and second, to please the mouse-ey among us (lookin' at *you*, Lebs).. why not have a key that switches from mouselook to mouse-interface mode, and have all our panels and PDA clickable from hotspots on the HUD... ie; tap or hold <anykey> and click on the cargo display to bring up the jettison window, or on the target info area to bring up the sector-list??

Yay! thurisaz, great ideas. Just like TeamSpeak, hold down a key to speak, so you just hold down the tilde key (~) or whatever to use the mouse as nav element.

An expansion on thurisaz' idea:

- On a tap of the key, the PDA (or parts of it) is displayed, and stays displayed until you close it (or tap the key again).

- When the key is held, the PDA will only display until the player lets go of the key.

That way you don't get sore fingers if you're, say, pre-plotting your Deneb Run course, and newbies won't be confused if they hit 'u' and the sector list only displays for half a second.

Maybe also add an option to configure the "PDA key sticky threshold" or somesuch to allow the player to define what is meant by a "tap of the key".

Keep in mind.. IF we get everything together to release the first generation stuff, this is only the first generation. It'll probably just be the "u" menu, and maybe (hopefully) some mission stuff. We'll see how it goes.

Ray's been pretty busy this week, he's also been trying to get the game to run (at all) on the Intel Mac Mini.

Well I know I can't tempt John or Ray with a quality Ale like I can with Michael. So..... Coffee from Caribou if you release the PDA on Sat!
:D

This PDA seems versatile...

I've always thought the "News" tab was a bit bland and cluttered in the station... what if you could sort of create Internet capabilities for this thing... perhaps you type in a url and your guild home site appears specially formatted to fit the screen. I've always found it rather difficult to switch between internet and game. The actual "News" thing could also be redone (in color and such) in the process, hosted online. Perhaps even be able to publish what you write in the notes feature..

But why stop there, why not give it better media capabilities... you can access all image files without having to "Show Package Contents" all that. At the same time, why not add in a movie recorder in the process (though I bet thats been brought up before). Eventually you could even venture into voice chat and such, all done through a PDA.

I also wonder... would it be too cheap to have a proximity warning for rare ores in asteroids?

Oh my gods! This will rock!

Also, it would be awesome with LUA scripting. Think of all the XM L magic we will do! Think of all the UbarLeet little gadgets we'll have in our PDA?!

Also, what's wrong with the Personal Data Assistant name? "PDA" is fine. The only problem is that it feels, atleast to me, like a bit of a Doom3 ripoff.

Interlink Communication Terminal, ICT?
Tachyon Burst Com, TBC?

No matter what you call it now, it'll allways be "the PDA" :D

So, PDA content suggestions, rough concepts:
- Kill list (Atleast last 10 or 20)
- Killed by list (Atleast last 20 or 30)
- Trade prices (Portable home-made trade report)
- Friend-or-foe identification (anyone not in the list is just default FoF)
- In-game settings (chat, radar settings)
- Nav map (like now)
- Roid scan list (contence, sector, coordinates)
- Station visit list (when last visited)
- Encounters list (last 50 players within radar range)

All of theese should be saved clientside. All of them should be sendable to other players.
"I'll send you my helio roid coordinates, but it'll cost you your encounters list..."

- Kill list (Atleast last 10 or 20)
- Killed by list (Atleast last 20 or 30)

Easy enough, I'd think.

- Trade prices (Portable home-made trade report)
Dunno how easy this would be.

- Friend-or-foe identification (anyone not in the list is just default FoF)
Probably won't happen until the new faction system is out.

- In-game settings (chat, radar settings)
- Nav map (like now)

Shouldn't be any problems here.

- Roid scan list (contence, sector, coordinates)
Hrm... I think this one will have to wait. It's exploitable with some of the Lua interface (or was).

- Station visit list (when last visited)
- Encounters list (last 50 players within radar range)

That should be pretty easy too.

Oh, I have prototypes for all those in my head.
Legitimate LUA access will be a dream come true!

On the sector list, would it be possible to make the targeting work like the old way? Currently when you click on a person in the sector list it targets them but leaves the PDA menu up. Might be more effecient to have it work like it used to, where selecting a target also closes the interface.
May 20, 2006 slime73 link
No, clicking on them without the window closing is necissary sometimes now. I would suggest double-clicking would close the PDA.
May 20, 2006 Ghost link
Double clicking would be fine too.
May 21, 2006 LostCommander link
I'm for double-clicking closing the PDA in general (not only in the 'u' list screen. That could be a way to get around the chatbox focus dying.

woow lotsa reading to be done incarnate :p but go look at my suggestion on lighting after the change to 'realistic lighting'
