IFF Nation

Jun 01, 2003 Skyfox link
It bothers me, yesterday i was botting, when some person came out of the black and killed me. I couldn't tell in time to react because the red dots of the bots surrounding me look all alike.

If i had seen him coming, i would have had time to defend myself.

A lot of problems would be solved by doing a simple IFF modifacation to show in color what nation the ship is from. Marron for bots, red for red, orange for yellow, pink for blue. Or so on. That way it would be considerably easier to distinguish who is who.

I like it, though the pirates in the game will complain that this lack of distinguishment between different types of foes is good for gameplay. It allows them to actually sneak up on you. I would say that this is a good idea but only if a cloaking device is implemented to keep the game interesting.

Oh oh even better, red for red, yellow for gold, blue for blue.

Any additional granularity for the radar, IFF, HUD, etc will make the game better, so long as it's done cleanly.

I believe the devs are planing overall HUD and radar enhancements (gleaned from some past thread? or did I dream this?... i'm not sure.)

As far as gameplay; the uber-gizmo thread allows this to go on. If you have an enhanced radar system with better IFF, pirates will need to counter that by outfitting their ships with hacked-IFF-response-gizmos (stealth suite) or cloaks or whatever.

right. i'm just saying that to make the one change, others would need to be changed to rebalance the radar so that even evil pirates get a fair chance.

"Oh oh even better, red for red, yellow for gold, blue for blue."

well, that would be better, but already yellow stands for missiles fired by anouther player and blue for missiles fired by you. So...

Why do we need to give the pirates a fair chance? To kill an unsuspecting botting newbi? If they want to pirate, let 'em do so they just have a mark that distinguishes them from the bots.

Cloaking devices and IFF scrambelers would be nice, and they might just work, if traiding from the hidden sectors made less profit and the devices were VERY expensive.
