with google adsense! how about some small text only ads along the side of the message board? imabetcha that many people would be more than happy to help guild software make money with these little ads.
I duno, if I pay for a service I'd rather not have ads.

I would not mind seeing ads on the website, I am sure they would keep it to a bearable level. I want them to make money.
perhaps we could have adverts on the stations...lol
Oh message board. I though you meant in the game screen. Oh yeah ads in here wouldn't hurt, but I wonder how much would they be worth, we don't have all that many people on these pages do we?
Mind you, excluding a few obvious people, most of the people here are savvy enough to just avoid clicking the ads anyway, so all you'd accomplish is making the forum unsightly without generating any real revenue.

The problem with putting Google Adsense is that the ads shown are content based. Given that this is a space based MMO, who do you think would end up being advertised on the site?

Yes, you can filter out competitive sites and so on, but what you would end up finding is that the Google Adsense ads would mostly be providing ads for VOs competitors, on VOs pages. Not a good idea.
Other stuff they could be advertising are cool indie IT products. Have a look at the GP2X for example. Its a linux based handheld games console, about the size of the PSP but it runs just about every emulator you have ever seen or heard of and there are new games being developed for it all the time. The guy who runs the affiliate program in the UK pays £7.50 per console sold.
Look at www.gp2x.co.uk for an idea of what it is.
There is plenty of other stuff out there, which is non-competitive but of interest to the VO userbase, which could help make the VO devs a bit of cash to inject back into the game.
Something to keep in mind though is that this site is developed to look the way it is and work the way it does for a reason. I imagine the devs are fairly happy with the way it is right now and aren't all that interested in completely redesigning the site for ads, which is pretty much what it would take. If you want to give them more money than just your subscription fee, raise a suggestion for a way to donate to the project.

Ahhhh, I love my Gp2x, specially now I can play FF VII on it :D (not much money to be made in advertising it though)

Google Adsense might work, but with some of the topics posted in this forum, I can imagine some very weird and wonderful ads springing up :D Imagine what it would make of all the ninny threads :D It costs nothing to set-up, but like donations, the devs have to show where the money is coming from, ect. Is it worth the extra hassle?
