Factions

Apr 14, 2007 Aramarth link
In other games I am familiar with it is common practice to, in a PvP setting like we have, limit players from having a character on both sides of a war. Players should have to make a choice, similar to the new faction system preventing being in favor with both factions.

This would eliminate all the alt-powered espionage tricks people play. At the same time, no one would be limited in the number of UIT/Itani pilots they had, if Itani was their choice. Thus having multiple personalities/characters/pilots would not be hindered in any way.

By removing all the warring faction characters, any player could effectively change sides at will. However, having both at the same time like the present is a conflict of interest, which detracts from the enjoyment of more serious players.

Yes, for the record, I have abstained from having any alts in the opposing faction.

And it could be dodged by having two accounts. It'll still be just as exploitable that way as it is now.

If guilds are truly paranoid about spies, all it takes is a little research to determine if someone is an alt or not.

I don't think this is necessary.

alt-based spying is actually quite retarded.

we had a couple of scares in [itan] while i was an officer. we reacted to those in various ways and we actually had a member at one point to return the favor to an opposite guild (i still have complete forums archives on that date, for some reason).

what did we learn from that? nothing. what could the other guild learn from our guild forums? nothing.

there's just nothing really good you can do with any of that. most guild forums have no tangible info per say, that can actually be profitable. ore location databases are generally of the common knowledge type of sectors.

the only plausible use for a spy in a guild is for role playing.

so, why bother?

Even VPRs think it's totally great. Kudos.

Spying is overrated.
Nothing to gain except sense of accomplishment for a spy who managed to get into *enemy* guild.
Borb did it with style and we all had good laughs out of his escapades.

Maybe in the future... with crafting, guild stations/outposts, guild command/operation center capships, custom made weapons etc. spying could become lucrative but in VO as it is now... pfffft.

Well I shouldn't have to hear people bitching about using channel 11, but I do. So somebody did something once, and apparently no one in this thread is admitting it.

The spying that took place in 11 was during an old capship battle; though I have seen people throw a fit if they even suspect someone is leaking their plans to the enemy (the late BDC comes to mind), as long as there are no real consequences you can't do real damage. Like Bojan says, once there are important things in the game, it will be another matter altogether, but even then, I don't want to see each player limited to just one faction.

Yeah, during the Capship Battle 'ol Deku was relaying our Itani nation-chat to others as I recall. Of course we fed him some false info and it worked pretty well if I remember right.

Anyway, aren't the devs working on this right now?

For the record, though, I never suggested limiting UIT characters. Every player can have two factions. Just not opposite sides of a war. Is that too much to ask? The conflict of interest is clear, I think.

Have six pilots, not my business. Have Union or war faction, peaceful or violent, nobody's business but yours. But don't tell me flying for two different sides of a war is logical, reasonable, or a God-given right. I reiterate again, I don't know of any other game that allows you to fight for either side based upon mood. Make people pick one, and share the fate of their choice.

I did.

What about that:
As an Itani you come to C-10 and see 2 other Itanies shooting one Serco. You can turn it to 3vt or reboot to Serco character and make this even...

I disagree with this idea, I don't think you should be limiting what my alts can be. If you do that you pretty much end up limiting the choices of a player by removing one third of the world from him at the very beggining.

Sure WoW does that on it's pvp Servers, but they also have non-pvp servers where you can play both sides, VO doesn't.

This a game, so yes I think I should be allowed to play on the side of my choice depending on my mood.
