latency indicator?

Jun 17, 2007 cfranz link
I'd like to see a small latency indicator that checks how my communiction with the server is working. Today (june 17) was a bad day, with frequent communication failures. I'd like to know if it's communication, or a game crash so I don't have to log every time

Try /ping.

The server has been funky this weekend. This is not typical.

WoW has a small pingmeter on the bottom of the screen, and I found it very helpful until I found out that I was just grinding for the next thing, and it would continue that way for the rest of time, and decided to bail when the going was good.

A small colored dot in one of the corners of the screen(thinking upper-right) indicating what your latency is would be neat. Green for good, yellow for okay, and red for bad. Guild Wars had one and it was sort of neat.

Yeah, the Guild Wars one is great, but that's also because you can get the real information by hovering your mose over the indicator.

I'd very much like to see such an indicator, but only in addition to /ping, not as a replacement :)

Tremulous has a lag-o-meter. Amazing little box. Constanly shows ping and everything. I'm still not sure how it works. Could anyone check that for me?

you do realize that constantly polling to gage your lag actually adds to the lag, right?

oh, and so is downloading p0rn while you play. prioritize. like i did.

/ping only polls the client for the latest stored average of packet round trips from the server. It doesn't actually ping the server because, lawl, pingdeath.

needless to say, uppercase no longer plays VO in light of his extreme pr0n downloadage.
