Crafting, Mining, Trading, and Missions . . . revisited

I am certain all of these general topics have been discussed. Likley in more detail than they will be discussed here. Still, I have some general ideas of features I think would improve this game greatly:.

CRAFTING

Honestly, when I think of crafting I think of Ultima Online and World of Warcraft -- my two frames of reference. I am not sure how exactly this would fit. Still, I think there are some cool possibilities. I will leave the more in-depth discussion to others who are more invested in this topic. Still, there needs to be some way to take resources, either mined or traded, and convert them into personal use rather than merely selling them to stations. Which leads us into . . .

MINING & TRADING

Mining and trading are fun. I enjoy them. Mainly because I suck at piloting right now. Seriously. They do, however, need to be more relevant. In order to make them relevant there needs to be some form of crafting system. In the alternative, there needs to be a reason to collect supplies.

I want to be able to meaningfully trade with others. Crafting or supply collecting will allow this. Crafting offers many options, so I will focus on supply collecting.

Collecting Supplies

Let's assume powerful guilds, or even players, are offered the option to "commission" the creation of special crafts, space stations, or weapons/tools. These tools need to be only available by commissioning their creation. Whether they should be tradeable is another thing. Perhaps the cost of their trading should be significant -- I dunno.

Anyhow, to be able to commission the creation of something, the commissioner would need to have the supplies required for the item. He could get these supplies himself or through trade. Which leads to . . .

MISSIONS

Player created missions which are, essentially, open bounties for supplies should be allowed. Players should be able to enter missions into the computer and place some of their funds into "escrow," with an added "management fee" for the privilege. These missions would essentially be "bring me X number of Y ore" or "X number of Y equipment/supplies/food."

A station would be designated as the destination point. Once the mission is completed by another player, the money in escrow is transferred to that player and the mission-creator is notified and able to pick up the cargo at the station in question.

Anyway, just some rambling during the middle of a class.
