eye candy: jump points

Jun 24, 2007 cfranz link
One of my favorite (if old) space operas is and was freespace. In it, I particularely liked the way they implemented the jump point visuals: instead of a circle as now in VO, they used a very cool looking 3D globe (ca. 1km across). Once you entered it, you knew you could jump. This is purely eye candy, and it would not change game play in any way. Just a nostalgic nod to freespace, and an 'artsy' suggestion. If interested, I can and will provide some screenshots.

We used to have exactly that. I think it was an artistic decision to get away from what had been done elsewhere.

There was a Diablo symbol in space at Jump points in the Independence War games

Ah. Ok - I can accept that. A pity, though, as almost every other aspect of VO has been done before -- the tree factions (except that in Jumpgate they use the colors red, blue and green), grey space, the semi-circle speed indicator, the newtonian flight model, worm holes, the turbo, the current jump point looks exactly as in Wing Commandser, the targeting recticle, the upper left chat, the 'Viper' lookalike, heck - *anything* on screen has been done elsewhere before. This is *not* a bad thing, IMHO. "immature artists imitate, great artists steal." I posit that you steal, steal, and steal to make VO the best there is. Take something existing, and improve it. But this is of course only my personal opinion.
