Radar Masking

Hello all,

I propose that a type of radar masking should be implemented, for lack of better words. Radar masking, being that enemies and unknown elements not in the players imminent line of sight, should not be valid targets for radar visibility or missle capabilities.

Example being a Valkyrie hidden behind a asteroid, waiting to flank some unsuspecting merchant vessel in sector14. The Valkyrie would be visible only as a ghost image, giving perhaps a radar lock for 1 second (but still not being valid for targeting), and then flashing on and off radar locks for every 10 seconds. However, once the hypothetical merchant vessel has reached a certain range from the hidden vessel, it gains full radar and missle capabilities with that target. While this ship is hidden, you could make it that a ship with its components active (on) could be detected at a further distance, and a ship without its components active (off) could be completely silent, invisible except to the eye. **To regain on status from off status you might use the invulnerable status, minus the invulnerable of course, make the hidden unit powerless while he/she attempts to repower their ship.

Another example could be, that you are in the seat of the merchant vessel, and the Valkyrie has manage to lay a bit of damage on you, you are meagerly armed and no match for the faster, stronger, perhaps more skilled fighter. It could be used to illude the Valkyrie by skillfully rounding a corner and shutting off your ship, and with some luck, the Valkyrie may not find you.

I believe this would add a very interesting element to the game, and would encourage teamplay in many varieties. Also, this could possibly be implemented with bots, making for some VERY interesting future sectors perhaps, with mass bonuses (i.e. good trade goods, hidden ships, perhaps even long range warp gates.)

Good thoughts...and radar masking / limited range / stealth tricks (asteroids, powerdown, etc.) is in the pipe eventually. It's been mentioned before, but it seems as if almost everything has.

This hasn't:

I want the "Bovinator"... an organic ship (a-la Farscape) that looks like a cow and shoots milk from eight belly-mounted cannons. The milk has a short range and does 500 damage. It also turns the screen white as the cockpit is covered with milk. If you don't dock in a station soon enough, the milk goes sour and the pilot catches salmonellae taking an additional 1000 damage per second.

Optional configurations include Methane Mines, but we don't need to get into the ugly details of that weapon.

When damaged, the ship leaves a trail of fur and blood instead of smoke and sparks.

Oh, and to keep this somewhat on topic: the Bovinator has no radar but can smell enemy ships even when they are hiding behind asteroids, using two large nostril-like particle scoops. Simply because, well, cows don't have radar.
