Capturing/Destroying Stations

Jun 24, 2003 Kuvagh link
Here are some possibilities:

To capture a station, its defenses would need to be destroyed so that troop-carrying shuttles could dock. Instead of unloading cargo, the shuttle pilots would unload troops. If enough troops boarded the station it would be captured by the attacking nation. No FPS combat would take place on the station, of course. The station would have numbers for the amount of troops from each group. As they died, you'd see the numbers diminish. Those defending the station would want to destroy the shuttles before they could dock. The shuttles would need escorts much like flag carriers do now.

Key Neutral Stations: Cannot be captured or destroyed. If they were, trade would come to a standstill.

Player Stations: Stations built by players could be captured or destroyed.

Key National Stations: Certain stations, like the giant HQ stations I imagine might one day exist in each nation's core sectors, could not be captured or destroyed. The war can't be truly winnable, after all, or the game would end!

Other National Stations: A certain class of national station could be captured or destroyed allowing the "front lines" in the great war to move around.

I think it is a great idea and would add to the gameplay. Perhaps home sectors could have a new type of cargo - soldiers that you can unload on the station of choice. If that station had soldiers from other team, simplified battle would take place - with a bit of dice rolling one team will be victorious with appropriate casualties. Other team would be wiped out. One of secret sectors could have "SpetsNaz" units that have much higher ability to capture stations, but because secret stations are hard to get to, they would be harder to use. Also, if you jettison troops, they should all die. Boost speed could also be reduced for ships carrying troops. Taking hull damage to the point of 25% and below should damage number of troops.
What do you reckon?

Oh, and the Spetsnaz could type random stuff into your chat while they were onboard. :D

Player made stations shouldn't be anything like we have now.

It should just be 1 dock, fairly small, and weapons have to be caryied to the station.
Lvl 1- holds 100 rounds of each type of ammo, can repair but takes a minute. holds 2 of each weapon. Can attach 1 defensive turret
Lvl 2- holds 300 rounds of each type of ammo, can repair but takes 30 seconds. holds 10 of each weapon, 2 of each ship. Can attach 2 defensive turrets
Lvl 3- holds 700 rounds of each type of ammo, can repair but takes 15 seconds. Holds 20 of each weapon, 5 of each ship. Can attach 3 defensive turrets
Lvl 4- holds 1500 rounds of each type of ammo, can repair but takes 8 seconds. Holds 40 of each weapon, 10 of each ship. Can attach 6 defensive turrets.
Lvl 5- holds 3000 rounds of each type of ammo, can repair, holds 80 of each weapon, 40 of each ship. Can attach 10 defensive turrets.

The turrets don't come free, each level costs 2*(last lvl) so if lvl 1 costs 200k, lvl 4 would cost 1600000, plus cost of lvl 1, 2, and 3. Not by any means cheap.

The time it takes to repair encourages people not to fool around that far out in space.

The main nation sector will have a bay where you can fly through and all ammo is restocked and armor is repaired, for free. This bay is a crucial advantage for when you are being attacked in your nation's home sector.

Losing player owned stations would be a very very bad thing, soemthing that took a long time to build and a lot of money to build falling into the enemies hands for free is not good. (well relatively free)
