powering down

i saw something like this in a story some 6 months ago and im sure it has been mentioned before but here i go anyways. I think you should be able to shut down your ship and make yourself invisible to radars. You could use this when pirating, bounty hunting, hiding, bascallly anything. You could just slow down, pick a vector near a station or w/e and shut off. Noone would know you were even comming (the oddly bright colors of some cockpits would shut off too) unless they zoomed in right on your location.

I also feel that you should be able to clamp on to objects. this way you could hide in astroids, or under stations and what not.

any chance of being able to shut down devs?

please excuse me if my idea is crap or if you have all heard too much about this idea already.

everyone has been asking for this idea i think, but it's always a good idea to remind the devs of stuff. they cant read everythnig.

I like it. Very Star Wars-ish. Chased by a squadron of pirates, you fight to shake them off hop into a different sector, clamp onto an asteroid and shut down your ship hoping they don't spot you. Then hit the switch when their in position, watch your energy bar recharge and you weapons come online and Avalon them to hell. Or somesuch.

Yup, I myself asked for this long ago, and I'm sure others have as well.

It would be double-uber-cool.

For pirates: pirates power down just behind a wormhole, so that when someone warps in, the pirate is behind them and doesn't show up on "u"...

For soldiers: Your armada is massing in sector 12 for an attack on 2. Ships warp in one at a time and quickly hide and power down. Once the armada is assembled, they power up and attack in force.

For traders: You're a trader and have a full cargo hold. You wander into s7, and realize too late that the sector is in the middle of a war. So, you power-down and hide until the coast is clear.

Also, some other similar items that were suggested in the past:

1) Being able to power down weapons or shields (if we had shields) or engines to give more power to the remaining ones.

2) Being able to block radar with asteroids, i.e., being able to hide on the dark side of asteroid.

3) Being able to hide from radar with gizmos (cloaks), or being able to mislead radar with gizmos (i.e., radar refraction: auto-aim, homers, and bots target 20m off-course)

4) Showing if a targeted ship's weapons or engines are powered down, so that you can tell if a ship is hostile or not when you target it (of course, if both were powered down, it wouldn't show up in radar so would be harder to target).

...and many more. If I remember correctly, the devs reacted favorably to many of these suggestions, but it was a long time ago and I could be wrong.

Just make it impossible for the flag carrier to power down. Else someone will space the flag invisibly (it is possible to space even in the new version, just harder).

Good point rouge... but also remember that CTF is not going to be around forever.

However, I suspect that it'll prevail until 3.4 or so, until there's enough [difficult] missions to keep people busy. Actually, it might even last until there's player-playable frigates, since that would make CTF obsolete...

These are generally useful things to be able to do, not just for CTF, and ought to make for some interesting situations. (I can imagine something like 20 fighters all hiding clamped down to a large asteroid ready to ambush an enemy squadron that's about to pass through the sector.)

So I agree with these requests.

Just some extra ideas that I thought I'd throw out there:

Shutting down and landing seem natural, and would always be possible for non-spinning smooth objects, but perhaps clamps to stick harder to surfaces should be an addon? Also, maybe to have a ship that clamps down and turns into a firing turret locked to the surface of whatever it's clamped to would be pretty cool.

One other idea would be to allow clamping onto other ships/objects and pulling them along (if your engines are more powerful and they can't shake you off.) - this would seem to have complicated game effects that I haven't thought through.
