Xico - generic ship idea

Sep 03, 2009 Xico link
Hello, Here is some generic ship design (as state din game)

This is about 10 mins of work, and should be viewed as such.

Once again, just a ship design idea, barely modelled, and not textured.

Thanks,
Xico

Nice starter ship, mate :)
Very spartan, very Sercoish
Now, if you can texture well, i think the devs will eat you up and give you a payroll.
Which can only be a good thing :)

It's a start I guess :p

But don't get to excited about that payroll. Inc has stated time and again that adding ships to the game is not simply a matter of modeling and texturing... In fact, I'm pretty sure there's still some unused (but very pretty) model/texture assets from the last guy that worked at guild doing graphics for VO.

This would be better in Suggestions. I'll move it in a bit.

I like it as discussed ingame.

Cool, where would the cockpit window be and will the final design be symmetrical?

drazed, i always find it better to live in hope than anything :p

Xico: it now looks more like a cool capship station.
Nice

EDIT: Shark - its space, ships dont NEED to be symetrical

At this point in time, I'm simply trying to contribute to the game. Over the next few days, I'll be building a fully modeled, textured version of this ship.

At that point in time, we will see how easy or hard it will be to add into game, and speak with the devs about further possibilities.

Thanks,
Xico

I like it. Im guessing that the Black is the framework, grey is standard fuselage, and red are Cargo Containers?

I've already spoken with the dev's, and fully understand the rules and regulations.

This is just to get a general feel for a ship design before I model/texture and produce a finished ship.

Thanks,
Xico

I like the idea and designs, and the general shape of the ship is good, but I would really like to see something with a skin on it...

I like it so far, I don't think we have a non-symmetrical ship in VO yet. And I especially like how you're keeping it more skeletal like the marauder or the prometheus as I'm not a big fan of the perfectly grey-plated ships with wings like the ragnarok and the current centaur and such.

"EDIT: Shark - its space, ships dont NEED to be symetrical"

That is not really right and I feel an urge to correct it so I will :)

"it's space, ships don't need to be AERODYNAMIC."

Since there is no air in space you can fly a cube and it will accelerate as quick as anything... however, symmetry is quite important, even in space, since it can have a large impact on momentum/inertia. At the very least, mass must be balanced, either through symmetry or similar.

That being said, let me re-correct that statement once more:

"its a GAME, ships dont NEED to be symetrical"

Some of the ships (such as the vulture) are both space flight capable and terrestrial flight capable, however.
Sep 03, 2009 Pyroman_Ace link
Theoretically, per the backstory, ONLY UIT does not need ships capable of terrestrial flight because UIT is the only faction that lives exclusively in space.

That said, even UIT, being traders would likely be landing on Serco and Itani terrestrial colonies.

Now, important to note, if you have enough power, lift, and thrust being provided, you can get ANYTHING to fly. Now since we do not have terrestrial flight at this time, nor do I believe it to be a planned feature, we can leave out the need for them to be symmetrical or aerodynamic, and chalk it to the fact that they simply overcome gravity and maneuverability problems through sheer use of power.
----------------

Now, having said that, I do like some symmetrical designs, while others look good being un-symmetrical. If you look at EVE Online for instance (I know, I know it's not our favorite game, but it's relevant), MOST of their ships are in fact not symmetrical or aerodynamic.

I think that a good mix is nice, and I would like to see more of it.

I think that our current fleet of ships is very well designed in the sense that they are very smooth, clean designs, but most really look more like hot-rods than combat fighters. Only really the Raptor, and Teradon LOOK their part.

I think getting away from the stock, clean ships and getting into the more rough and tumble ships will actually make VO more realistic.
----------------------

One other thing we might want to consider doing, is actually coming up with more ideas on redesign of some existing ships so that if Xico's vessels start getting picked up, we can retool some of the existing ships to bring them up-to-date.

Yet another eager n00b with a tad of [insert irrelevant program here] skill. What a waste of space.

I'm simply trying to contribute to the game.

That's cute, but trying and succeeding are, particularly in this specific instance, very different things.
