fire swarms backwards
They are a defensive weapon, firing them backwards would make them a more effective defensive weapon and a less effective offensive one.
If not current swarms (as they are kind of needed for shield takedown till torpedoes come along) then a new defensive only variant of swarms?

+ 1 This or give some ships the option of the weapons port aiming behind the ship.
I would include mines in this which also 'launch' forward.

mines don't launch, they drop in place ;)
you can drop them in front of you by moving in reverse ;)

Mines maintain a bit of your velocity for a short period of time. They move forward for a couple seconds if you're moving forward when you drop it. :p
and move backwards for a couple seconds if you're moving backwards when you drop it?
When used on a behemoth while thrusting forward mines are what can best be described as launched forward and out a few meters before settling into place. I'm just saying that in the spirit of the OP, that they should drop behind the ship so that you don't have to fly past them while being chased. I'd like that extra second or so of either reduced evasion opportunity or distance between myself and enemy when it goes off.
On another note, an exciting way to suicide during an attempted flight is to have swarms & mines on the same trigger.

Lol, I've done that more then once by accident when I was a noob :p

how about a turret port swarm launcher? :)
-1 for OP as proposed. Maybe if enable some alt-fire to it, so shoots backwards, almost like RL flares.
+1 for "light" Swarm Turret, something like 6xGems voley, 60 ammo
+2 to being able to use own turret. Engage turbo, goto turrets until WH/3km. Better than rear-facing weapons ports.

Huh, I had assumed we already had swarm turrets. Since it sounds like we don't: +1 to getting some!
-1 to having normal weapons fire backward, other than perhaps in special ships with specific rear-facing weapons ports. I'd rather see more encouragement to get people to man turrets when you want your back covered.

A swarm turret makes no sense as swarms are target and fire. No aim required, so no need for a skilled position ie. second player. And moving from ship control to turret makes even less sense.
However a trade ship like the behemoth with weapons ports defensively placed both front and rear does make sense, since you lose both flight time of the swarms and likelihood of actually hitting your attacker because of the requirement of having the swarms perform a full 180 degree turn before zeroing in on the target.
I'm all for turrets as a means of getting players to work together. Just don't include me in on that because I will neither man a turret or fly a ship with someone else in the turret.
Edit: skilled players can make effective use of swarms offensively against over aggressive opponents, however, my understanding is that we are talking about defensive usage here.

"Swarms were originally intended as a defensive weapon that could be used by Traders when fleeing from a pirate."
So yes, I'm talking for defensive purposes. I know swarms CAN be used offensively, but it seems their design was meant as a defensive weapon, in the current state they are IMHO more offensive (and often used as a griefing tactic) then defensive.

Perhaps a rear firing unguided swarm launcher?
