Item Timeout Based on Volume
Should the timeout of items be linked to how large it is?
It is very difficult to grab more than a few of bulky items such as observer optics (150cu) due to the slow speed of a Behemoth XC. It is a bit frustrating when there is a large pile of them that vanishes because the trip to station and back simply took too long.
Another possibility could be making such items stay in sector for as long as it is active / a player is present.

I suggest a 15 minute timer on items dropped through hive skirmishes. The timer starts only if there are no players in the sector, and resets upon player reentry. Since dynamic hive sectors don't have static hive, this timer (that theoretically crates an infinite duration to drops) will not cause an overwhelming sea of drops due to recurring bots.
Should be simple enough to implement, and this way there is no pressure on the players to scramble an XC into the system, and lose half of the items anyway.

Why not just have the "lifetime" of a cargo crate reset when someone grabs part of it? That way you get 15min to complete each trip. Moth XC's are slow, but not 15 minutes slow. :)
because it's a pain in the ass to pick up and drop different cargo pieces to reset their timers, for the same end result of having the cargo around longer.
I suggest making said optics smaller, first.
+1 to OP, still.

First of all, I do agree that longer timeouts would be nice.
However, do remember that this is a multiplayer game. Not everything is supposed to be easy to do solo. Harvesting large items seems to me a pretty obvious activity to call in a buddy or two to help you with. One pilot can stick around to guard and refresh the items while the other hauls them. Swap roles every other trip or so, so you don't get too bored.

I was going to add something to this, but ARF beat me to it.
Presently, stacked cargo items will have their timers reset if more items are added to them, such as during mining operations... however, picking up a portion of the stack does not reset the timer, which doesn't make sense. Picking up a part of a stack should be considered interacting with the stack, and therefore, reset the timeout timer.
Furthermore, stacked cargo should be given a 15 minute timeout, regardless of whether the player leaves the sector.
unstacked cargo timeouts may remain the same, and would be unaffected by these changes.

This thread was started as a result of a levi run, where upon killing the levi one of the members scrambled for an XC and during the time it took the XC to get to the loot some of the valuable loot timed out. So even with proper cooperation with current player population sometimes an XC really is too slow.
frankly, I don't see what's wrong with the drop timer not starting while a player is in the sector. If nothing else, how am I supposed to pick up observer optics to wait for an XC to get there when only an XC can pick it up to begin with?

Simple. Have it nearby to begin with. Don't take a Lotus Elise moose hunting and then complain when you can't bring home the kills.
Park the moths in a nearby station. When you're ready to start hauling, one person stays behind to guard the optics and keep them on the 15 minute timer. The second grabs his moth and returns. Then he guards and refreshes them while the first guy goes to grab his own moth. You obviously need to plan ahead and park some moths in a nearby station if you can't buy them in that system. Jumping out to an in-system station and returning takes only a couple minutes, even in an XC. Especially since the Ion Storm exit points were moved. Just make sure you send for that first moth within 10 minutes or so of the first drop.
A better method is to have three people: two people in fighters and one in an XC (or preferably a heavy miner mkII, so they can have some defense). The fighters kill stuff and/or defend the moth as needed. The moth collects optics and drops them all at the same location to make refreshing and hauling easier. At some point one of the fighters goes and grabs his own moth to start hauling. Both can, if it's a safe location and they're feeling lucky.
Depending on the types of bots and amount of pirate activity in the area, the above may be able to be pulled off with only two people.
