Speaking of such matters - with rank comes added responsibilities as well.

Seems like it would be easy enough to do... officer missions could be based on the badge system, with certain new badges indicating military rank.

Trying to tie up and evolve the idea:
1) Include military ranking, very few ones as already proposed, like (Officer Cadet, Pilot Officer, Flying Officer,Flight Lieutenant, Squadron
Leader).
2) Include the LICENSE (Leave Permit) option. Someone in military can take a mission in station that gives a license, unlimited. Another one resume duty.
-While in military, you progress ranks doing military missions. Refusal to take at least a weekly mission would decrease rank slowly.
-License "freezes" the above progression/decrease (Will you be 6 months away from game? Take a license and keep your rank!)
-Desertion and AWL
When someone in military and without license does not take military missions for X time (3 months?) he is warned about his duties. If not mission taken, 1 week later he is demoted one rank.
Once the rank reaches its lowest end, Officer Cadet, he is considered AWL _Absense Without Leave and is constantly warned during his next gameplays for a month. After that, he becomes a deserter, and becomes HATED with his nation. Why not KoS? Deserters are not traitors, yet. He "goes to jail" and have another chance to progress in military, but would have 2 extra lower ranks, and ugly missions (boring military courier, cargo hauler, so on).
-Traitors (attacking his own nations resources/voys/guards) in military are BAN from military permanently and become KoS with a bounty on his head.
-The higher the ranks, more benefits he gets, as cheaper prices for weapons and ships on military stations, up to entirely free ships and weapons on borders' barracks.
(OT)-National ships (Valks and Proms) becomes more restrict to military personnel, basic models remains "free4all" as now, while better ones requires Officer Cadet or better. Not sure how to deal with X1, since it is an experimental ship...

Alloh, you are a bit off topic. Your process from active military member, to inactive military member (VO active still), to deserter, to KOS is far too long for what we've been discussing. License idea is sound, though new..
