make friend keys not involve pming e-mails

Mar 05, 2011 davejohn link
As is stands a player has to pm an e-mail to the giver of a friend key. For good reasons some folk are reluctant to give an addy to someone they just met in a game.

So change it to :

A "can I have a friend key"

B " Yes "

B selects friend keys, types A into box , clicks offer key button.

A gets message in a popup box , B is offering you a friend key, enter your e-mail and click accept

B gets message in friend key box , key accepted.

I think this would improve the uptake of friend keys.

If you are reluctant to give them your email address, they aren't your friend. If they aren't your friend, you shouldn't receive a friend key from them.

I sometimes feel like people might think I'm up to something when I offer friend keys to them - sending your email address to a known pirate seems a little shady.

Cherrybloodsyrup, you have a different definition of friend than I have. Actually, I don't have a single definition - I consider it a spectrum. To me, "friend" can range from somebody I'd trust with my life to somebody I just met a minute ago who made me chuckle a little.

Another argument to this:

it's always nerve-wracking sending a friend key. You wonder if you typed (the email) in correctly, and if they sent you the proper email. Entering a pilot's name instead of an email would have a smaller chance of a wasted friend key.

The nice thing about entering an email address is that you can send the friend keys to people you know who don't currently have a VO account.

What would be better is to have radio buttons on the Give Friend Key dialog to select whether you want to send the key to an email address or to an existing VO character, as per the OP.

Huh. I could have sworn the system yelled at me if I mistyped somebody's email - I thought it looked at the name and email I entered and tried to find them in the database and then complained if it couldn't. Maybe my memory is making stuff up again though.

If that's the case, +1 to the radio box as well.

Errm, you can send a friend key to someone who has not even signed up, so I'm sure there is no database check. I've currently got 2 un-used friend keys, and I'm still not sure if it's because I took down the email address wrong.

+1 to making it username based.

Also, make it so that when the recipient of a friend-key receives the key they don't see the name of the actual holder of an account. Use the current name of the character that sent the friend-key. Unless that is already implemented, then never mind.

In - game a good way way is to simply have the giver input the player name and VO looks up thier Email and sends the key. Email is keep private at all times like it should be.

Exactly PAK . Either by look up or personal entry .

I agree, mostly from reading Cherrybloodsyrup's reply about misspelling the email address and wasting a key. I thought I did that not too long ago, luckily I did do it right.

Allow it to recognize and accept emails as well as this, so actual friends can give keys to eachother when one friend has no account.

Why don't we just start handing out friend keys to every new player?

The keys are intended for use with relatives and friends you have met IN PERSON. This suggestion is stupid.

This would be exploiting Vendetta time.

An stop being such a noob Thespian. I really don't have a issue with giving a new player a key, allowing them to play longer. What I do have a issue with is that they get my email address.
