i would love to be able to pilot star ships like huge massive war ships or massive mining ships and transport ships able to carry mass quantities and a ton of guns. and have huge pvp star ship battles mixed in with fighter battles. and the goal is to protect your star ship with other people in fighters. i hope this makes since

Have you been to Deneb yet?

The massive ships you refer to are known as capital ships, and we do have them. Currently they are all NPC controlled, but since a month ago it has been possible for players to craft their own. It just takes a very long time to do so with the current implementation, so nobody has finished one quite yet.

The border skirmishes in Deneb already work the way you describe, though the capships you are protecting/destroying are NPCs. You are able to dock with the NPC capships in order to man their turrets though.
