Bar RP suggestion
+ Add NPC barman
+ Add NPC casino, like blackjack, roulette and other minigames. At least in capitals and commerce station
P.S. I far as I know, it could be done with bots, but still, people can't keep bots in every interested station sector! ;)

-1 to minigames. I would accept that as a Casino Station in grayspace... preferably the Ark, pirate capital and space casino...
+1 to BarBot - but serving drinks and "gray" missions, as smuggling, special requests, etc.
Even better is BarBot serves as a medium for P2P trade - one can request or offer items to Barbot, and it offers that as "Bids" for other players. Once items are sold/purchased by 2nd player, BarBot sends PM to 1st player and complete transaction, (Limited to 1 bid per player).
Like those already discussed Simple Player-Originated mini-Missions to purchase/sell items.
Barbot should simply refuse "regular" and bulky items, each station bot operating only with a few items, as special weapons, hive items, smuggling...

The bartender bot could also charge for drinks (credit-sink) and cut you off when you've "had enough"
As a side-effect for drinking too much, have the game put some blur shader effects on and goof up your controls! (GuildWars does this, it's hilarious!)
This has been suggested before though.... +1 to OP anyways.

how about we resoponsible adult players (ya'll, not me) will take a real drink while said barbot gives a drink. real blur effetc!
casinos are a neat idea, well a neat idea if one were to have a casino station somewhere. either in grey, or capitol system, or some "resort" system. just as a break from the usual go there buy that, get boomed.

You are stupid.
If you want to walk around in a station, minimize vo and load quake. if you want to play poker, load yahoo poker. if you want to pretend to order a beer, type in the bar chat "one beer bartender" and "thank you, keep the change", and shut up on the suggestion forums. If you don't have the imagination to do your own pretending, an npc bartender won't take you very far anyways.
god i need to blast something....

There is already a casino in Odia. Currently it only has Slots, but I'm busy building Blackjack, Roulette, and multi-player Poker now that I've finished installing features in the Casino.
The Casino also has a Front Desk which will try to be helpful. The ladies there aren't too smart and get annoyed rather quickly, but eventually I intend to flesh that aspect out as a more fully featured bot. I suppose adding a Bartender module wouldn't be TOO hard. ;)
Oh, and while I'm at it, while the Casino has a PM interface, there is a game player under development too (currently being tested by Mulle). It should make the experience a bit more lively. Once you've set yourself up with an account at the Casino, you can actually play games from anywhere, however playing while in the station will add some extra features in the game player.

+1 for The Bartender
+1 for The Casino Station in grayspace
-1 to "trial2" for being an idiot.

BTW, for those interested, just send a PM to PhoenixVoice and ask for help.
e.g.
/msg PhoenixVoice !casino help
That should get you started. While this isn't exactly a casino in every port, you can play from any port, so long as you PM the casino. You just have to be in the same sector in order to start an account, add any money to your account, and close out or make withdraws from your account.
The casino records all transactions in a log and saves all account balances to a configuration file, so bank balances are preserved. One thing I insisted on during the design phase was that we take every effort to protect the balance of any player using the casino. After all, otherwise no one would use it if they couldn't trust that their account balance was protected. You can always PM !casino balance from anywhere to check your balance.

Keller, +1, good implementation of casino. I think devs can use part of PhoenixVoice casino plugin code to add it to every commerce or capitol station in the game.
For me - the best part is that it's designed with each game as a plugin module. There's a basic API that games have to adhere to, but once done, all that needs to be done to bring one online is to drop it in the right folder, and add dofile ("games/mygame.lua") to the manager file; the casino will load the game and make it available upon restart.
The game player plugin works nicely too, and has a similar architecture. I should make it available for download publicly. Currently, the Slots game is text based only, but I'm hoping to work some kinks out of the graphics delivery so you'd get a nice slots look & feel too as well as all the sounds. Running the gameplayer in any station will run the ambiance sounds. If you run it while just in your ship in the middle of an asteroid field (doing whatever it is you do in the middle of some rocks out by yourself), there's no ambiance, but all the game sounds will still play.

Nah, the devs should write their own. I swear those slots are rigged... >_>
+ 1 to NPC barman. He could offer many uniques services that are easily implemented.
Paying the barman for info/rumors I think has been suggested before (i think Inc said that was his original plan?) Like, pay the barman 50k and he'll tell you where another player was "last seen" similar to the info that marshalls provide. It doesn't always have to be accurate either, for increased rp, he could be accurate 8/10 or 9/10 times... There are plenty of other uses for a barman also, like alloh mentioned he could offer special missons perhaps to people who bring him Deneb Rum, Dau Wine or Serco Ale (ick).
-1 to casino because A) Keller is doing an awesome job at developing a kick-ass casino plugin and B) the devs have PLENTY of stuff to do already.
abortretryfail, All slots have odds. Keller's happen to have better odds than any you'd encounter in Vegas. It wouldn't be in PA's interest to scam trivial amounts of credits when the real purpose of our casino is to make VO more interesting (I think...) Besides, gambling has risk otherwise it wouldn't be fun!

He's just complaining because we have ONLY slots atm.
Never fear, abortretryfail, Blackjack will be ready before too long. I have the deck class all done and tested, the command set and state flow is designed, I've wired up the basic commands (just last night). All that's left is to finish building the dealer algorithm. (which is designed; I have to find time to code it)
