Add a stress-test / benchmark mode to VO
Add a stress-test / benchmark mode to VO.
It seems like all the necessary components for something like this exist considering the Android port has the single-player mode and the pre-recorded demos.
Load it up with some pre-recorded dogfights, flybys of the nice looking stations, some of the bone roid sectors, and finish it off with a big capital ship battle loaded up with 60-100 ships like the border skirmishes or NPCs killing off a Levi. Then save statistics throughout each demo for FPS, CPU load etc.
Might be able to score some free publicity on Linux or Android with something like this if it ends up on a review site.

+1, good idea

+1, good idea, but it can be much simpler to keep small, without Levis.
Also good for testing setups, new hardware, etc...

The whole point of it being a benchmark or stress test is NOT to keep it small. Big border skirmishes and Levi sectors are probably some of the most hardware taxing parts of VO...
a plugin to translate alloh to english might have the levi sectors beat.
VO is supposed to play on most hardware, including ancient ones. A benchmark does not have to show every resource in game, indeed, it would be much better if restricted to one sector, and include more bots instead of a Levi... leave it for game only.
So, the best would be to have a light benchmark with fewer ships on a somewhat emply sector, suitable to ancient hardware, and another intense benchmark, including queens, bots, npcs and capships from every faction in combat. All restricted to same sector. Jump animation and sector change would nulify any practical benchmark...

Even on slower hardware, Large skirmishes and Levi sectors are playable depending on your detail settings. I do skirmishes pretty often with my shitty old Intel 945 laptop.
This has been planned for awhile. We have a whole "demo" system on Android slated for this, which will get back-propagated to other platforms.
