Remove Loading Screens

Oct 02, 2011 Saorlan link
I find the use of loading screens really removes a lot of feeling of being in deep space.

Loading screens really take away from a seamless perception of space and makes the game feel bitty and disjointed.

I do not understand why we even have them as they are there for a few moments before entering the new sector. Surely the warping animation could just be extended whilst the game "loads" in the background?

Or a similar screen to what you seen in Star Wars when they warp could be used.

Or even the same thing that Eve Online uses - a prolonged warping animation when jumping through gates.

Please please please consider removing the loading screens as it really really really (!) dates the game.

Totally agree with this, the loading screen really kills the ambience of the game. An extented warp animation would be much better.

There's probably a technical reason for the loading screens. It would be cool if they had like the background of the sector you're jumping to though instead of just the VO logo and a progress bar...

Yes, we should do this, and yes, there are some technical reasons why. For instance, our I/O is not currently threaded, and if we do some kind of cool animated display, it will skip and jump around as textures are loaded in the background.

Improving this is a goal of ours.

Just make a static perspective image of stars blured from infinity to perspective and say it is animated. Who will know?

Edit: Also add an arrivial alarm buttom to wake me from my nap when the sector finally loads.

This can already be done with plugins.
