Mine Idea

Well, since people here are very nice and receptive to idea's with encouragement and all, I came up with one more thing that might be fun.

2 idea's for mines.

The first would be that, with perhaps a nice background story about an intergalactic war or historic battle or something, every now and then, for no reason at all, a large field of mines sweeps through a sector, moving, not quickly but so that the field would pass in a few hours. It would be best if, 100-300 mines could sweep through, proximity activated, maybe even a new type of mine with some fancy look to it to make it look like its been floating around in space for a while.

Second idea comes from sci-fi movies :). Lots of space shows/movies have mines that are magnetic. They don't detinate till impact, but they do start to follow ships that pass within a moderate radius of them. Magnetic mines would be fun. Perhaps they could be outmanuvered or missed using turbo or good flying, not making it an instant death just to see a mine.

Also could be a new combat technique to fly into battle trailing some mines and see how many you lose to other ships? :)

Oh well. That's the ideas.

Also you could substitute the "floating mine field" for anything else that might randomly float through, such as, oh, a cloud of explosive weapons, unstable. Or a gun-turret, broken off an unknown ship, malfuntioning and firing at everything that comes near it?

Mmmm... Ooo! And EMP mines! Like the one in the ST: TNG episode with the Promethean (I think) cruiser! *drools*

Regarding a cloud of mines: I don't know about mines, but come to sector 9 and you will see a cloud of sunflare rockets sweeping through the sector every 10-15 minutes.

Magnetic mines: I like it.

EMP mines, placed near wormholes would continuously drain energy and prevent a jump?

"Yes! and do you realise that I am dragging mines?"

ahhh great movie

Mag. Mines> I thought about it a bit more and decided I don't like it. The initial concept is good, but the idea of dragging loads of mines behind you is not. A 2 man pirate team of 2 different nations could very easily make a mine cloud, get a valk and drag the cloud around a trader. Instant death, no chance of escape. The pirate doesn't even have to bother aiming, just overtaking the trader would be enough.

ahh but magus, there is a problem with draging magnetic mines, speed. you would have to be rediculously skilled to drag one mine without it either catching you or falling behind, can you imagine trying to drag an entire cloud? especially as the trader would be able to just run away. Unless the mines would constantly accellerate, in which case the ship attempting to drag them would reach max speed, the mines would catch up, and BOOM.

end of problem.

I kind of like the idea of a magnetic proximity mine, get within 100m and it starts to creep towards you. the closer it gets, the faster it moves, (simple algorithm here, acceleration is inverse to distance from target). when it gets within 20 meters. BOOM

if you get more than 100m from it, it is no longer attracted to you, just continues on in the direction it was last moving.

hmm server load could be difficult there.

I think they would cause server problems as opposed to gameplay /pirating problems. if the devs can impliment them without causing lots of server load, i think they would be a good addition

Anyone watch stargate? Yes. Anyone see the episode where apophis and some other goa'uld communicate about a treaty, right next to a minefeild? I have.

These mines were really cool, they kept in orbit around a planet, if it detected a certain type of weapons fire (in this case goa'uld based technology) they would go right towards that ship, mind you this isn't a tiny minefeild, it was easyly millions of mines.

I'd like to see something like this, like a mine cloud around your ship, someone comes to close (about 100m size cloud, maybe 200m attack specification) a couple start seaking the ship as if they were seekers or something.

(ignore the fact that the mines in stargate were very big (filled most of the cabin space of a goa'uld scout ship (ask verdandi for the real name if you care)))

Hehehehe... I can see it now... "The mine! It's coming at us!" THUNK "Wha? But... Where's the boom?" "Sir, we've got a gigantic *thing* stuck to us! Our mass has been quintupled!"
:P
