mouse-lock feature

You could just turn down the mouse sensitivity when you get in a heavy.
But that would require the ability to edit options while in the station. *nudge nudge*

I still haven't experienced any hornet wobble using WASD+Mouse...

LOL @ roguelazer!! He's joking, right? ROFL!!

Sidenote : You roll faster with a joypad/keyboard. Still prefer keyboard/mouse setup though.

Yeah but think about this for a second, Hunter. You roll faster... AND you can use the mouse. AND there's no wobble. Just THINK about that. Why would you not want that?

OR! Don't fiddle with the mouse, and let more people switch over to keyboard. Then we keyboard people wouldn't feel as alone...

Actualy if you edit your mouse sensitivity, you can make it like that

Sam, we don't want reduced mouse sensitivity. We want mouse lock.

I'll see if I can convince my dad to loan me his joystick for awhile until this is implemented. The wobble in the heavier ships just drives me nuts.

Ow my eye!

I do want all the keyboard benefits that's why I tried to use my brother's joypad but I couldn't get used to it nor did I have the ability to look around while I turbo. If I could bind shift then I would try keyboard only.

Hmmm... While I love using my keyboard and mouse, the wobble is insanely annoying... I tried using my joystick a few months ago, and I decided I didn't like the feel with Vendetta, so I went back to keyboard and mouse... A mouse lock ability would be awesome...

I totally agree, a mouselock feature would be great.

The only problem with the entire keyboard thing that I have is that I can't have all my weapon groups how I like them. I tend not to group more than 1 weapon to a control. I have a 5 button mouse and I absoloutely love having total control of the weapons on my valk instead of having them grouped together. If I use the keyboard all my fingers would be busy flying my ship and I'm not really able to fire as easily as I'd like.

ADD MOUSELOCK!

Sherman, that's another one of the problems I had. I have a two-button mouse and with keyboard only controls it was a pain in the major arse to fire. That and it's downright harder to aim with a keyboard. It's like using a mouse has the downside of wobble, while a keyboard has downside of oversteering. A mouselock feature would give you the best of both worlds.

I finally got a chance to test this out. Spellcast and I went to sector 7 for a duel test to see which control scheme was the best. But before this, let me offer a little background. Spellcast and I would usually duel each other in sector 9 with Hornets, using joystick and mouse controls respectively. He would always kick my ass mercilessly and I would always wonder how he could deal with the wobble so much. Then it hit me--he didn't have the wobble problem to begin with!

So then I started thinking about switching to keyboard controls to see if it would even up the score. The results were surprising. The moment I went out of the station I immediately noticed just how responsive and quick the Hornet really was, depsite all my previous whining and bitching. It was just incredible not having to see all the wobbling and flying through the sector so smoothly. Half of your engine's power wasn't spent on reorienting yourself over and over for each spin and turn.

So after getting used to the controls, Spellcast and I went to sector 7 for another duel with Hornets. But this time I was using the wobbleless keyboard controls instead, while he had his trusty joystick at hand as usual. Lo and behold I finally win against him, even though it was a very close duel. The new control scheme made the Hornet lethal again. You wouldn't spend half your time correcting the wobble.

However... as a gamer who almost exclusively uses the WASD + mouse layout, the keyboard still wasn't as comfortable to me, despite the more responsive controls. But I can't imagine why a similar mouse lock function can't be used for the mouse also (not just the keyboard). It'll save a lot of aggravation for those pilots who prefer the medium or heavy class type of ship. Trust me, there's a HUGE difference between the two.

So please, devs, this would definitely be a cool feature that might put life back into some of the lower agility ships. It may very well be that the problem wasn't the agility, hull strength, or weapon ports of these ships all along. In truth it was all the wobbling of the reticule that crippled them badly.

And while some ships may exhibit ultra low sensitivity or ultra high sensitivity with this mouse-lock feature, there'll still be middleground ships which will benefit from it, making the wobble problem gap even smaller. As always it'll be an option, and not something forced upon everyone. I mean heck, right now we've got players whom dynamically switch between physics mode and arcade mode all the time when they fly around. Why not one for a mouse lock?

that's quite impossible since anyone using the keyboard/mouse config gets the wobble effect.

I've been thinking, why isn't there a mouse-lock feature? Keyboarders have it. Joystickers have it. But... mousers don't. What I speak of is the elimination of the reticule wobble and the smoother control method, with the sacrifice of looking-before-turning advantage. In other words your ship's turn rate would match where your ship points. In other words it would lock the mouse's center crosshair to the positioning reticule. In other words... uhh I think you get the idea.

Now you may be asking, why would you want such a feature? Well, to some it's an easier way of controlling their ship. And in fact, it appears that people who fly heavier ships benefit more with the keyboard or joystick controls than mousers do. Your ship isn't constantly wobbling and trying to compensate for your twists and turns, but instead gets a direct input with a smooth, linear path. And this could work wonders for aiming weapons. I think some people would much rather sacrifice the ability to look ahead before turning, than to deal with the horrid wobbling.

make it optional, that way both crowds are pleased.
like the physics/arcade flight mode.
as for the idea: sa you said, it would be nice for the heavier ones.
now, i switch ships fairly often, which means that in a fighter ship this does not matter as much, and i would also like to have mouselook in a fighter/bomber to be able to look around while turboing. so, make it optional.
Nov 04, 2003 Arolte link
Oh yeah, optional. Don't want this forced on to anyone. But making it switchable on the fly would definitely be cool, like how the flight model can be switched by a single key.

I don't think this would work as well as you think it would. I can try it out. Later. But the real issue is that the control system isn't perfectly tuned for every ship, or it wouldn't wobble.

i would also like the mouse locking feature. it'd certainly help my aim and make the game seem a little more like Descent: Freespace. i loved that game.

*bump*

Just to piss a1k0n off, hehe.

=)

But really, I've been trying to mess with the dampers and it's still pretty damn hard to aim well in medium/heavy ships. Why oh why can't there be a Freespace-like control scheme.
