[100] moderation

Greetings VO Community. I would like to discuss an important matter here, so please leave all RP grudges aside. It is in best interest of the game we all love.

So with the recent increases in player numbers (which I would like to congratulate the developers for. Great News!), a lot of younger folks have started to engage in debates on 100.
Sadly this is not always productive and not too rarely it obviously violates the ROC. I have seen it all, to be honest. Peronal insults that are completely below the belt and obvious hate speech. People were insulted for their belief. And regularly there are absurd, profane and inappropriate spammers that spend hours with spamming the chat with absurd talk.

This hasn't been much of a problem before because VO had a stable and solid playerbase, mainly consisting of Veteran players who just enjoy playing the game and resub once their Sub runs out. The occasional new player that either left or added to this playerbase. But with the new increase in Player numbers, of course the number of idiots who come to spam exponentially increases.

Long speech, short meaning. We need moderators. Now.
I know you guys are busy, but isn't it possible to give some of the older Veteran Players moderating powers so that they can atleast temporarily mute obvious violaters? Of course that'd come with the promise to not use it for RP reasons or to abuse it otherwise, but I think we have enough people sane enough to actually act in the interest of the game...

Nah, I've seen some pretty nasty stuff from the vets as well- myself included among the offenders.

+1 If there is someone willing to do it. I recommend Capt'N B because he'll take them behind the roid if they get out of line, and if they don't.

Honestly, if it's done, it needs to be done consistently, not just when someone with extra powers has time to play. Otherwise, the application of moderation will be inconsistent and resented.

What I expect to hear though, assuming we hear anything is that if you see something offensive, send the devs a copy of your errors log, which they will then review and address if appropriate- which amounts to pissing in the wind since the turnover rate is so high I don't expect but a handful of any group of new players to last more than a week anyway and the next batch will be exactly the same.

So, Interstellar is back then?

+1 it is getting bad enough that I turn 100 off altogether. I think the public chat should be a social place, not a place one avoids because of immature and innapropriate content.

Simple solution:

Lower the threshold required for /vote mute and reduce the time.

Set the limit at 10 votes and lower the time-frame to 2 hours.
Jan 06, 2015 Lunchfoot link
Reducing vote mute threshold could however be exploited and abused which i suppose could be handled with a severe penalty from the devs? What do you think?
Jan 06, 2015 Kierky link
lowering to 10 is a good move, since the mute would only be 2 hours, it would discourage being annoying in chat. It shouldn't be that exploitable.

Yes, lower to 10. If there is rampant abuse then you can just move it back.

+1 to Savet's idea as a start
+1 to the OP as long term.

If someone is an idiot and invites trash-talk upon themselves, if someone is venting after a round of PvP, it would be clear to a moderator that it was different than some asshat sitting in a station spouting off random crap.

BTW, since mobile users are exploding in growth, and since many mobile users are teens, and since some parents still monitor what their kids do, seeing the word "c*nt" would probably be enough for a parent to force them to uninstall the game. I'm not saying complete censorship, which I hate, but some moderation.

The chat filter is turned on by default.

And hell no to a player moderating something in-game. THAT, my friend, is absurd. Who wants to play a game in which players that have played longer get special privileges and responsibilities. That would ruin the atmosphere of the game even further along from the current state its in.

When regarding what's offensive and vulgar, I think you'll find VASTLY different opinions. Too vast to let individuals not part of the development team weigh in. Having players moderate the forums is far enough for me, thank you.

Keep in mind, I don't talk smack on 100 and think that something needs to be done about it as well, but not by making a player moderator. That's just dumb man.

I think if there is a moderator, the only power they should have to change the channel of the offender to channel 69 for an hour.

+1 savet ... vote mute would work better if the threshold wasn't so high

Darth, there has been a guide on recently by the name of RelayeR. He's a player, and is actually in the guild SoR.

I don't think players moderating is a bad thing at all... it's just up to the devs to make a smart choice on who that is. With great power comes great responsibility!

Ah this didn't pick up too bad.

Death Fluffy: Indeed. It has to be a fair amount of very active players. It's hard to pick of course, but not avoidable long term. We cannot rely n /vote muteanymore once Vendetta is really populated. And I have faith that it actually will some day.

Savet: I like your approach. It might be a first solution until the player numbers increase significantly more. Though I am not sure if even with 10 a /vote mute would happen. Many newbies seem to not get the /-commands or cannot be bothered to make use of them. I suggested moderators because I want to get rid of offenders very quickly. However, I am not opposed to trying out this first!

Darth Nihilus: Smart to lay of the alcohol before you post mate. You don't have to insult the idea to tell me you dislike it.
I disagree with you. I wouldn't be bothered if I knew there's 4 or 5 guys who can get rid of obvious offenders. And this takes out your last point. It may be debateable in some cases, but the Mods would mainly be there to insta-mute obvious offenders.

Another suggestion, since vets and newbs both like to talk their "trash", set up 100 as more of a social channel, as was mentioned, and then those who want to talk their "trash" can go to a different channel like 1000 or whatever. This of course would take some self control and be agreed upon by all. 100 stays so "trashy" that I seldom have it on, and it would be good for all to have a channel free from "trash" where we could exchange greetings, ask questions, and other game related things.

NC-Crusader:

Trash is trash, so you don't need to put them in between quotation marks if you think trash is trashy. That's just weird grammatically, as if you're trying to imply that trash is not really trash.

I think we already have that - channel 1 is where noobs get their help and where people try to be friendly. Anyone airing their laundry on channel 1 is usually told to move his dirt to 100, and he usually obliges.

Otherwise, good suggestions here.

/me goes to make 9 new accounts so I can be a self-proclaimed moderator

Maybe make a PvP channel, channel 1000. This might encourage those who want to PvP and comment on PvP to do so off of 100. I know PvP is not to blame, however I think a good bit of the trash talking is a result of people discussing PvP.

Also, a lot of trash talkers like to project an inflated view of themselves and may feel that the PvP channel would make them look cool.
