Random Ideas (Comets, bomber UIT Rapter, scanner port)

Nov 12, 2015 MikeyCarter link
Comets: Have a ball of ice chunks that basically orbit a sector(s)

UIT Rapter Bomber Variant: When hunting a queen you basically need the two large ports of the Ragnarok + small ports to take down the shields and take out the queen. Once you load the UIT Rapter with swarms... you've got nothing left. How about a UIT Rapter Bomber variant with 2 large ports and at least 1 small port? More or less just looking for all the scanning with the rapter in a ragnarok configuration.

Higher badges have more meaning. Trying to get Miner III at the moment to unlock the ship... but after that the badges stop unlocking things. Would like to see more things unlocked as the badges progress

Ammo crates: One thing I hate with missiles, or railguns on solo missions is the long travel back to the station to reload. Might be an interesting idea if you could warp into a bot infested sector and jettison a few ammo crates ... then hit the bots and when ammo is low go run over a crate.

Scanner port: On some variants have a port dedicated to just a scanner... mineral and/or cargo and/or storm...

Comets: -1, but it would be neat if asteroids actually moved around a bit in the sector or through sectors as they orbit the system sun.

UIT Raptor Bomber Varian: Use the Ragnorok. That's what it's there for.

Higher badges: Yes, they should mean more goodies for the effort and content invested into the game by the player. This would be a way creating scarcity for easily accessed items.

Ammo crates: No. Just no.

Scanner port: That's called you're small and large port. You can equip at least one scanner on any ship except the XC.

+1 Higher badge stuff

I admit I kind of like the ammo idea, but I suppose you could just get someone with a trident to come with you...

The UDV is already a fantastic bomber, and includes most of the telemetry you'd ever need.

Or the Trident... Basically anything you'd ever want to put a cargo spoofer on can't equip a cargo spoofer.

Hmmm a temporary moving ice roid (aka a comet) with super high rare ore ratios would be a neat idea.....for the bin.

Scanner port: realize the small/large ports are for this now. But in many cases the port is needed for something else.

Granted I completed the Master Prospector badge using a hornet... still would be nice in the case of other ships to have a cargo scanner sort of thing without having to use your weapons ports to do it. Better example is hunting bots in ION storms... by the time you put in your radar extenders... where do you start putting the weapons?

Personally I'd like to see the scanners take no slots... but eat something else up... like grid or power or something.

Other thing that feels backward in this game. Many things your prize for completing a goal is to make the goal easier to achieve. Thus negating your need for the item after achieving the goal.

Just a hypothetical scenario.... say to take down a queen I need constant ammo... a Dent makes that easier... but if the only reason I'm killing queens is to get a Dent... why do I need the dent after killing all those queens. (realize a bit of a bad example as the Dent has many uses but hoping it get's my point)

Prospecting 120 sectors is another sort of situation... reason I'm doing all that scanning is for the advanced scanner.... but with targetless plugin, after scanning the entire verse... do I need the advanced scanner in the end? (again realize not the best of examples because if it wasn't for the plugin I would have a record of every roid I scanned.)

Prospecting 120 sectors doesn't necessarily mean you're done scanning asteroids by any means. Many miners map out every roid in entire systems to know where the best ores are located.

"Scanner port: realize the small/large ports are for this now. But in many cases the port is needed for something else."

This is intentional. Choosing to use a scanner means making a tradeoff that leaves you slightly more vulnerable.

"Better example is hunting bots in ION storms... by the time you put in your radar extenders... where do you start putting the weapons?"

In the other slot(s), obviously. This is only a problem in the mainline Centurions since they only have one slot to begin with. Either use a Rev-C/IBG, or choose a different line of ship for use within ion storms.

"Many things your prize for completing a goal is to make the goal easier to achieve. Thus negating your need for the item after achieving the goal."

Nah. For example, my reason for killing queens has nothing to do with being able to kill queens better. First I was doing it to unlock the mega-posi and the plasma-anni which I wanted for fighting other (non-queen) ships. Later, I wanted queen cores so I could build TU mines for killing players. Nowadays I kill queens because I can sell their drops to other players.

Another example: Behemoth. Having a moth would have made unlocking the moth easier, sure. However, my reason for wanting the moth had nothing to do with unlocking things and everything to do with making fewer trips to haul my loot back to the station for selling.

If you find that achieving a goal negates your reason for achieving the goal, then that means you aren't actually playing the game to play the game; you're just playing to score achievements.

I disagree with Rin. There are definitely achievements in the game whose prize is much less desireable once attained/obtained. Taking mining things, for example: By the time you've mined enough ore for the Miner moth Mk2 or scanned enough roids for the Advanced Mineral Scanner you find that your need for those two things declines immensely the moment you have access to them.

A trident is similar in regard to it's cargo hauling capacity: you spend ungodly amounts of time moving things around in behemoths, dreaming of that one day when you can have a trident to haul 1200cu of goods, only to realize upon obtaining a trident that hauling 1200cu is not really great now that you don't have to haul huge amounts of goods anymore.

This is not a unique problem to VO, many games struggle with figuring out the best way to get people to grind towards various goals. I think the lure we see used in VO in these cases above (i.e. do these repetative actions over and over and your prize will be something that would have made it much easier to do) is taking the easy way out from a game design perspective (at least in regards to the top prizes), and results in more endgame scenarios for people rather than propelling them further into the game.

What you're describing is somebody who has no personal need for items but insists on unlocking them anyway and is then disappointed when they realize they wasted their time. In other words: a moron. You don't have to unlock all the items on the game just because they are there; you should only do so if you either have a use for the item, or if unlocking things brings you enjoyment.

So, let's look at the advanced mineral scanner. What it does is let you scan roids from a greater range, making prospecting easier. And you get it by completing all the prospecting missions. However, completing the prospecting missions does not imply fully scanning all roids in the game. So if scanning all (or even most) roids is something you care about, then unlocking it is worthwhile -- indeed, unlocking it is a natural consequence of pursing your overall goal. You just have to take the time to grab the missions so you get credit for the work you'd be doing anyway. Once you do unlock it, finishing your job becomes easier.

The only people who would feel gipped are people who are only prospecting because some mission they chose to take told them to. They weren't prospecting because they wanted to prospect. They were just mindlessly taking whatever missions were offered.

Maybe that's where the problem is -- people come into the game thinking they have to do all missions, when they really don't. Maybe it needs to be more obvious that VO is the sort of game where you pick and choose the missions that are appropriate to you and ignore the rest.

What you are describing is your intolerance for the way MANY other people choose to play the game. Get a grip.

Achievements are a TOTALLY legit thing to pursue in a game. Furthermore, the assessed need or usefullness of what you might get for an achievement can be easily obscured by the desire of acquisition, only to be made clear in hindsight. Sometimes it's actually impossible to gauge how truly useful something is until you have it in your possession.

I really don't understand why you'd be opposed to giving further gameplay-related meaning / importance / inspiration to the major achievements in this game.

I really don't understand why you would interpret Rin's post like that, he's not saying that at all. Unless of course you're trolling on purpose. I thought you don't troll the people with good intentions?

take your meds, Joyless, lol.

Since you're seeing things that are not there, you need my meds more than me, schizo.

I agree that achieving things just to achieve them is a totally legitimate way to play the game, and a way that many people do play. I personally take ALL the missions, because I like to. What doesn't make sense is being disappointed once you have achieved them. Even if it's not something you REALLY need, ah, the joy of possession and accomplishment!

I will take the prospecting missions not because I want the scanner-- I don't, although the HD beam is cool-- but a) for the joy of completing missions, and b) to sell them to other people. More money for me, less work for them. Win/win.
