We have team chat, sector chat, messaging, and everyone chat. what we really need now is Group chat.

It works something like this:
/group1 add -- adds people to your group
/group1 add Starfreeze; "Sam II"; Blitz; SiliconGold2; ect

then when you go /msg group1 only the people in the group see it.

Want someone out of your group? /group1 remove

Great idea.

and we need a way to hide certain chats. IE, I'd LOVE to have general chat hidden and probably sector chat hidden too. I tried last night playing with hidelog on and it was pretty good but it would have been nice to be able to see team chat..

Yeah..... it'd make sense later on down the road:

If global chat was disabled except in a pre-game chat room.

If sector chat was the most used chat.

If team-chat was available to nation pilots (not independents)

If group-chat was used by guilds.

I like this idea, but I think the chat commands are starting to become a little too complicated. While this is a test version of a game, I think it's still possible to go overkill on the console commands. I'd rather wait for real radio channel type communication to be implemented. I mean that's easy to use besides pulling up the console every time and typing in a command variable. The whole chat system just needs to be revised to be more MMORPG friendly.

This group thingie could easily be solved with an IRC-like network, involving channels etc etc.

its a good idea...

question is what if someone adds you to a group and you dont want to be added to a or the group? do you get a choice?

An IRC-like chatting system would eliminate that problem as well, spectre.
The first to join a room (or a selected few), becomes an operator.

raybondo said he'll give us aliases that take user inputs (like "say" does when it's bound) which would make doing this possible.
