Moble web site

I recently tried to use the VO website and found the experiance ,,, horrible.

The print was way too small to be read even when magnified and links were impossible to find.
Whistler also recently mentioned the need for a mobile web page as well.

Times change fellows and VO desperately needs to be more accommodating to mobile users.

I would also like to mention that the PCC is likely to have a few members who are adept at web design.
Perhaps a contest is in order?...

Web design contest will not help. The big issue is the amount of propritary systems integrated that would need to be completely recoded to accomodate modern css for a complete responsive site that works for both pc & mobile. That is a big and costly job that is trumped by actual game issues that are being developed.

Any nitwit can download a bootstrap theme and change some graphics, actual implementation is a whole other ball game. A game that requires experience in not just html & css but how to take existing content and the dyanmic systems that generate them and make them work with a "design"

I mean, what a way to put it harshly, but Hoban rings true here, i beleive. You cant just make a website design for a website you know nothing about server-side.

That IS what you are saying, right?

Actually, I was advocating for separate web pages explaining the subscription options for PC, phone and VR. https://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/33190

I use my phone to read this site all the time on a first gen Moto X, seems okay for such a text-rich environment. It could be better, but there are many other priorities I would stack in front of a redesign.

At least on the few mobile devices I use, the VO website is ok on mobile. Lets be honest, it's only just ok on a desktop too. The viewpoint does adjust the font size and forum post size to sort-of match up with my mobile displays, seems to do an ok job with double-tapping to zoom to a post also. This is with Chrome or Androids stock browser; it is not the best but in no way is using this site "horrible" on mobile in my experience.

Go into settings and change text sizes for webpages.

I use the site every day on a Sony Xperia Z3, and it's not exactly a great experience or anything, but I would call it "usable".

I really wish we had a mobile-first design, and I actually tried to hack it a couple of times in spare-hours here or there, to see if I could basically do some crap to slam it into a mobile-first model without a lot of work, and the answer was basically "NO".

So, the best I came up with was just making the signup-page highly mobile-first, so that new users driven directly to that URL have the best possible immediate experience. I actually took that idea from Blizzard, who (last I looked) also had a similarly-poor PC-only site design for WoW, but had re-done their signup page exclusively to be mobile-first.

Eventually I'd like a total ground-up re-design around a mobile-first concept, but that's a lot of time (money) investment, and I agree with others on here that we have bigger fish to fry at the moment. But, I am highly aware that we probably lose people from the lack of quality mobile support (add that to the list.. lack of localization, lack of 50 other things).

I did style - changed it from pinpoints to tiny lumps... At max magnification i can barely make out the print.

As usual I seem to have found a worse case scenario.
Lucky me.

The point in the end is not to do it your self but farm the job out ... your busy.

What kind of phone, platform, OS-version, browser? Just curious..

Its an LG Premier L62VL phone running android 5.1 and a google browser near as I can tell.

The main pages are the worst but as I get down to individual posts the situation improves.
I suspect part of the problem is my browser is trying to display the entire page including the background image which limits the size of everything else. Works fine on the desktop but on a screen a tenth as large everything comes out way too small.

Do you use two-finger "pinch" controls to zoom into areas you want to read?

If that isn't working.. have you tried installing Chrome directly, from the Play Store?
Jan 08, 2017 PaKettle link
The zoom gets it to a barely readable level but too small to actually select stuff - Usually i end up on the wrong link. Fat fingers and bad eyesight is not a good combination.

Havent tried chrome yet.

I think Chrome is the answer. I can zoom to something around 48 point font landscape and 72 portrait (though annoying to read text that way) with perfect clarity.
Jan 09, 2017 incarnate link
Yeah, I can zoom in so far I can only fit like six huge letters on the screen at once. It's definitely readable for me.
Jan 09, 2017 PaKettle link
OK well not every browser can zoom that much I guess...

I will try the chrome when I get the time but Guild should look into making the page take up more space so not as much zoom is required for the lesser able browser(s).

I have used the exact same phone; a sibling of mine has one.. Chrome is your best bet, albeit not the greatest experience, as Incarnate said above.

I own exactly that phone, LG Premier L62VL, and with chrome browser this entire website is usable

Even with "Browser", seems able to zoom in enough to hit the little links along the left and read everything

regardless of browser there's just no leaving it zoomed all the way out and it being usable... but that's actually the case with a lot of websites.

was going to pm this question because it's off topic to the thread, but can't find a way to do so:
Since we have exactly the same phone lol... have you tried playing VO (online) on the phone? How's it do? (like load time while jumping/warping, does it handle a ton of bots&roids&players in a sector alright)
Jan 21, 2017 PaKettle link
I havent tried it yet so I cant say.

An LG Premier L62VL is based on a Qualcomm MSM8916 (Snapdragon 410), with an Adreno 306 GPU. It should run the game fine. It isn't super-amazing or anything, but it should be ok, especially given the 720p display on that phone (lower resolution means reduced fill-rate impact, and usually better framerate in tough situations).

The only real variable are driver challenges, or if the OEM (LG) is intentionally under-clocking the SoC. I highly doubt the latter, since the market is so competitive for phone performance. The drivers should be fine.

I haven't specifically used that phone, but we've been building and testing the game on a lot slower phones than that since 2011. Generally, if the intro battle-scene in the tutorial looks ok, you should be fine, that's much heavier than 98% of gameplay. For phones we don't really recommend doing the "large" hive skirmishes and Deneb sectors, but otherewise it's likely fine.
