increase trident/goli turret arc

Dec 20, 2017 -Wash- link
Can we please have the turret arcs increased to 90 degrees so they can be useful?

I'm actually suprised by this suggestion - what is the current degree of movement afforded? I thought it was somewhere shy of 140...

I think he may be asking for 180 degrees? Either that or Luxen and I are both dumbasses, and I won't rule that out.

Yes I meant 90 degreees from center or a full 180

Ah, yeah, i am pretty dumb. Only thing i'm worried about is visual clipping when you hit the 180 degree limit, but not really. can anyone raise an actual counterproposal to increasing the arc?

It's currently set to match the angle of the visual object that defines the turret. It has a particular angle of opening on top, and you can shoot out within that opening (~140 degrees). Originally I think you were only supposed to see from that same FoV, it just didn't happen to be implemented that way.

I don't have a really strong opinion about the current firing FoV.. except that it does match the visual mesh, and having a limited FoV does give some inherent benefit to ships with more turret positions.

I don't really have a problem with the current firing FoV, either. It's a limit, just like any other arbitrary limit (180 being just as arbritrary).

Personally, rather than focusing on the firing FoV, I'd be more inclined towards some kind of new "Tactical Officer" mode, that gives a 360-degree uninterrupted view, and full control of all turrets, but still enforces the same firing limitations on targets.

If it is an arbitrary limit how hard would it be to change it to 180?

"Tactical Officer" mode sounds cool and all but I'm sure there are more important things inline ahead of it and if the FoF limit is a simple number change from 140 to 180 I think some of us would like that more at least in the short term.

-1. If your turret can't reach the enemy, either switch turrets or reorient your ship.

"Tactical Officer" mode, that gives a 360-degree uninterrupted view, and full control of all turrets, but still enforces the same firing limitations on targets.

This would make turrets so much more useful on all ships

I guess tactical mode would force 3rd-person view, wouldnt it, at least until you chose to use a single turret in standard mode. It sounds awesome, though complicated too.

Luxen: I was thinking it would be first-person, but would just block firing where it wasn't possible. Ideally with like a semi-transparent overlay showing those regions. On the upside, you'd be able to select targets all the time, so missile turrets would be useful regardless of angle or target location.

It would take some doing to implement, but it would make turrets a lot more usable by a single individual.

If it is an arbitrary limit how hard would it be to change it to 180?

It's harder than I thought, actually. It's hard-coded into the binary right now, as a camera control thing. So, it'll at least have to wait until the next patch series.

It would be nice for the trident to be able to bring both foward turrets to bear on a target straight ahead, even if said target has to be outside a few hundred meters away. However, the only way I see for that is to move some of the turrets around.

+1 to incs idea - otherwise, i think the current state of affairs nicely offers variations to the two capships we can access. For example, extending the turrets arcs on a trident would then overcome the blindspot issue resulting in a large portion of standar capship attack tactics to become impossible, and recently the damage changes to capital ship weapons means they ought to still have some limitations...

But a mouselook mode that automatically slaves the turrets sounds like a boomgasm waiting to happen - ive dreamed about a turret bot that can do this hehe
