Allow us to Pay NPC rats for safe passage.
They are NPC rats right ? So they should ask us Safe passage fees like 24 hr warranty or something , so players who doesnt want to get shot by them can pay 300k or any amount you think is fair , to pass wormholes.
+1
I think 10 mil credits is fair.

They are real pirates not salesmen. Real pirates kill and take what they want.

+1!!!
Even better, have those payments set aside in a "Free parking"-esque account that is recovered by whoever kills the most NPC rats each week.

+1 , 10 million is too much , i think they should ask 1million to players who has small ships , and 2 m to goliath players and 3m to trident players for 24 hr :P
+1 if NPC behavior is random:
either they ignore you
either they ask monies and ye can pay requested amount to get safe passage
either they attack you and blow yer ship up

Just as you pay... I destroy them all muahaha
Killer should get the money they have collected

Greenwall+1, but it depreciates over time. As for how much is requested, maybe it could be determined by the combined liscences someone has?
but it depreciates over time.
why?
why?
Because pirates spend it to repair their ships or to go drinking and whatever else space pirates do.
I want to see drunken pirates after they reach a certain amount of monies...

unnecessary realism
Another carebear attempt at not engaging in any form of combat. They shouldn't accept money. If they do, nobody would ever bother clearing them.
I like deathspores idea however, a random behaviour where the pirates have a small chance of asking for a payment for a certain period of time sounds way cooler.

Stop using "carebear" word in everyone suggestions.
This is Not shooting online ( i agree this is a shooting game but dont forget Manufacturing/Trading/mining are other important aspects too)
You guys just want to steal cargo /kill others , and when you fail to do that , you beg devs to add npc rats , to shoot everyone who pass from grey ?
They are pirates not griefers , they should ask everyone fees who pass grey , and give them few seconds like 9-12 seconds to capships owners and 5-8 seconds to small ships type.
So someone can pay for safe passage atleast who doesnt want to get shot or interested in Combat.
Whether you make credits or you kill npc rats , it takes times so why not give peaceful players the opportunity to pay ?
And the amount which we pay to NPC rats should be awarded to those who kills most npc rats dents in a month.

Uh nobody "begged" the devs to add NPC rats. It originated from when the devs introduced random NPC squads in greyspace around the free week.

I know many peaceful manufacturers and traders that are easily able to deal with the unrats. The process of manufacturing your capship is an arduous procedure that requires you to get involved in combat. You cannot avoid it.
From what I can recall, the whole idea of tougher unrats roaming greyspace was introduced by the devs to primarily challenge the player base and force them to improvise. Paying them for passage is just too easy.

It is very easy for a solo pilot in a fighter to get all the unrats to target them, and distract them while a transport or escorted ship slips past. Get an escort or get good, this is Gray Space have a nice day. This should encourage player interaction which is a good thing in an MMO, regardless of the title.
-1 as wash stated they are indeed real pirates, i highly doubt back then on our wind sailers that they got realllll close and said "hey you, merchant, 1mill in Spanish gold for 24hours or taste cannon balls"
-1 to OP,
+1 to washes comment.
Ya wanna know about pirates in space? Look at the Reavers of FireFly.

In the most basic of definitions, pirates steal what isn't theirs to support themselves.
In VO gameplay, economical stability is much more easily maintained by doing non-piracy endeavors. Thus, it is very uncommon for people assuming the pirate hat in VO to sustain themselves wholly, or even partially by the value of the goods that can be stolen.
Piracy in VO has long been defined by the demand of ransom for withholding aggression. Aligning the behaviors of NPC rats with this traditional VO-brand of piracy makes a lot of sense and is more likely to enrich gameplay than it is to carebearify it:
-AI rats could decide to NOT offer ransom to various guild-tagged characters based on frequency of guild-tagged members who refused to pay or fled, or based on how many NPC pirates had been killed by guild-tagged members
-Ransom could fluctuate in dependability, where sometimes paying the ransom was effective, and other times the pirates would change their mind and still kill you, or demand more, etc.
-NPC pirates could pay YOU if you helped them destroy targets they called out
In other words, thinking in terms of "pirates must just try to kill everyone and anything" is simple-minded.

All but the filthiest of landlubbers knows that the song Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me) is the canonical authority on piracy. Now, note the first line of the second verse: "We extort, we pilfer, we filch and sack." So yes, extortion is one of the many colorful and entertaining activities that we pirates engage in.
