Rate limit 100

100 needs a rate limit of say 60 seconds. There is too much monopolizing of 100 currently by a select group of players.

I don't like rigid rate limits; they make conversation difficult. When actively playing the game, most people chat in bursts, not as a steady spaced out stream. Therefor, a better approach is to define a maximum number of messages within a moving time window. Any time you try to send a message, the game would check how many you've sent in the last N minutes and deny you if the limit would be exceeded.

For example, if the limit was five messages and the window was five minutes, you would have the option to either say five things in quick succession once every five minutes, or one thing every minute. It's more flexible, but just as hard on motormouths as your simple rate limit.

Not that I agree we need rate limiting in the first place. We will eventually, but to date I've only rarely seen 100 moving fast enough to be annoying.

Perhaps an even better solution would be to have the limit be variable based on the total traffic on 100. If only a handful of people are talking, the limit could be very permissive. If 100 is very active, things could become more restrictive to keep it sane.

We don’t need to rate limit 100 it would make the game seem absolutely dead. Every other mmos “general chat” is filled with spam bots yet people can communicate just fine. What we need is channel tabs instead of just one stream that receives everything that way you can go back and read 100 but also only see messages from designated channels when you don’t way to see everything.

This seems to be a personal problem. Instead of changing the whole chat just because a single person thinks some people "monopolize" 100 on purpose you should try these:
Ignore
Vote mute (in case it's actual spam)
Leave 100
Sector chat
System chat
Group chat
Guild chat
Private Message

I do however think that free players could have a small limit. Maybe 1 second. Just to remind new players that spamming isn't welcome. We currently have this system for everyone in system chat (I'm not sure why). This system could also be used on 100 for free players.

On the topic of oppressing F2Pers' means of communication, there's also this old thread: https://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/30077

I don't see why there should be a limit if the chat doesn't violate the RoC. If it does, send a ticket.

As heinii said, this seems like a personal problem...

If this is being aimed at suppressing chat for f2pers, might I add that nearly all of the games toxic chat on 100 comes from the subbed community. Suppress that before you aim at removing idle chat by f2p players on 100.

I find this post hilarious, because [some use] the relay as a monopoly, and the chat is no where near fast enough to be rate limited. Infact there's almost never more than 5 people in 100 at once. Maybe start suggesting chat moderation instead, and offer it for those who don't actually want to have control over the community but instead want the community to be less toxic by removing toxic content, and not using the system to do what they want.

[I removed some finger-pointing content here. -W]

@Aryko

Maybe your definition of toxic is different than mine or the only chat you see is 100 through the relay. 1 is one of the most toxic chats there is and I usually leave it unless someone is talking on there to 100. And a 1 second delay doesn't really affect normal chat very much since mobile players can't even type that fast in most cases unless it's spam. And upgrading to lite or subbing should be rewarding and encouraged.

Also toxicity is something that needs to be moderated and can't be removed by having a rate limit. This is just to prevent a little bit of spam without affecting the chat in a major way.

LOL for real? Maybe you do have a very different definition of toxicity.

I like Pizzasgood's idea of a rate limit of total traffic. Chat should not scroll off my screen faster than I can read it.

If the average reading speed is 3 words per second, chat can buffer as needed, to limit the scrolling speed to 0.3 seconds per word.

words over time and buffered lines can limit chat overload per player.

People should have time to read the last thing you said, before you are allowed to say something else.

So you should not be able to say anything again until 0.3 seconds per word of the last thing you said, starting from when it was actually unbuffered and displayed in chat.

That way if multiple people are talking at once, they each get a turn.

Note that I said "chat", and not just 100, or channel.

No single person or group of people should be spamming anything faster than everyone else can read all of it.

as the words are falling in the chat window, can we add a little gun to the chat interface to shoot the words on player own display, like a mini game in game for when we're bored? or maybe some kind of tetris?
