Disable comms in the New System

Just a thought, since its a new system it should not have any comm relays and hence it should not be possible to communicate with someone not in the system.

Basically no 1,100 or the other channels except system and sector chat.

While realistic, that really wouldn't serve to help gameplay itself, effectively blinding pilots like myself from helping in [1] and limiting an MMO's social capabilities.

Luxen, i understand what you mean but on the other hand, this system is really off grid. It is guarded by hive bots on one side even. No one who is on channel 1 should really be exploring in that system as it is.

Here is a solution for your concerns:

Some kind of comm relay placed on both sides of wh would be an interesting solution. You know how we have group radar extenders? Rename it to a Comdar extender (Communication and Radar Extender) . Anyone running that addon would then open up comms between the new system and the rest of the galaxy for their group and guild.

We can already communicate from Eo to Odia-- communicating from Latos to the new system, and henceforth, everywhere else, shouldn't be an issue.

We can already communicate from Eo to Odia-- communicating from Latos to the new system, and henceforth, everywhere else, shouldn't be an issue.

The fact that we can do that only illustrates that communication works well within established areas of the game. That doesn't mean communication should work equally well in undiscovered areas, much as people mention with comm relays and the like.

I've thought about this issue for decades, in the context of potential game-universe expansion. VO was always intended to have a theoretically-unlimited galaxy size, and "exploration" was intended, in the early days, to be a meaningful gameplay goal.

But, I've never been convinced that artificially limiting in-game communication, from a gameplay standpoint, would outweigh the inherent loss to the social-MMO side of things, or that it wouldn't just be trivially bypassed by people migrating to some other comm medium (like Discord).

I think it's an interesting topic to consider though, and I find it intriguing that other people have raised it.

as you just pointed out its so easy to get round it why bother

My intention wasn't to inhibit people but to give the system a feeling of being isolated from normal space. It's entirely from an RP perspective, inhibiting people forever from communicating wasn't what I meant.

Systems in VO I believe aren't in reality "adjacent" but separated by huge distances(The drastic change in the background nebulae makes this apparent). It's the existence of wormholes that make them feel as if Latos is sitting right next to Sedina. These are all well-mapped systems that have communications setup, unlike the new system.

I don't want "Unknown System", or any other new systems to have comms disabled permanently. The devs can lift it within a couple of days of the system being mapped out fully by a few, which in case of "Unknown System" was within a few hours of being released iirc.

You should also be cut off once the wormhole moves, i.e. someone in Latos won't be able to communicate with a person in "Unknown System" until the wormhole to it gets rediscovered, at which point you'll have comms restored without any waiting period.

Sorry for not making this clear in the post.
