Karma system

Jan 31, 2004 Santa link
i think a karma system would ruin the whole game for some poeple and would take all the fun out of killing people at random

I think this is the paragraph:

8 Basic rules for karma adjustment
* A user can only have one karma value per other player. This can be changed at any point
* Impact is determined by these factors:
o Current rating
o Assignment tendency (neutral = more impact, all good or all bad = less impact) [keep in mind that some users will ONLY rate players whom they like]
o Player age - long-time players will have more influence
o Playing time - people who spend their lives in BZFlag should have more power

Does anyone else have any comments here?

Well, theres been a lot of talk about this in the past (unprovoked attack should lower ratings, yadda yadda..) so when I stumbled on this link when researching bzflag I figured I'd post it here.

This is a pretty well fleshed out idea, which could be adapted to vendetta, or readjusted. (perhaps a 3d graph in-team vote on one axis, extra-team vote on the other, and an intersected point? )

Well, read up , discuss, don't flame ;)

i read through the description and agree with most of it.
the only thing i disagree with is that players are able to rate other players.
in my opinion, this opens the door to demagogic methods and can't be what we want.
imagine this: someone who is disliked by many and has therefore a low karma value, "pays" newbs and other players to rate him higher, thus reaching a "trustworthy" karma value, and the system is undermined.
take out that option, though, and leave it to the guide to dish out karma, and i'm all for it.
i think that would call for more guides, though, since it might be a little bit too much work for one person.

well, the point of a sequential scoring is that a n00bs opion isn't worth much cause he has low karma, and somone who's a negative karma (griefer) will generally count for even less, or zero , depending on the system. Thats the reason for a graphed weighting, and why its a good thing that other players can rank somone. (It could ofc. be two different values. "players, teammates, guides" that are then weighted together.

I think killing people at random should make you a target for anyone and everyone. It should also severely limit what stations you can dock at and who will do buisness with you.

If you are a homicidal mass murderer then the general public is going to want nothing to do with you.

In general I like the idea. I think it could use a few modifications for vendetta, but over all sounds like it has potential.
