Planets, Gravity, and Dust Clouds

Mar 09, 2004 grunadulater link
Sorry about the sudden flow of threads, but I just had an idea. What if planets were just like asteroids, except really really big and having gravity? People could then actually land on the planet, in a larger dock. As you enter the atmosphere, the gravity can get stronger. Maybe even there can be cloud coverage.

For dust clouds, there can be more "clouds". As soon as you enter the dust cloud, your visibility goes down a lot, like in Freelancer, and your radar starts messing up, like in Escape Velocity Nova. This would help pirates a lot, to have a base in the middle of said clouds. There may even be asteroids to make navigating the cloud harder.

Good Lord grunadulater!

Do you have any idea how large a planet is! And who the heck is gonna travel the thousands of miles at 200m/s!

Landing on planets! ARGH...

ok, you really need to dig through the old threads before posting something like that :p

The devs have repeatedly indicated that landing on planets is not a planned feature for Vendetta. Maybe whoever they sell to will add it.

Well yes. When earth sized they have a circumfrence of about 40,000,000 meters. At 200m/s it would take a mere 56 hours to circumnavigate.

The bigger a sector gets, the bigger the octree gets. The bigger the octree gets, the more lag there is, until the sector crashes.

Active/Passive radar has already been discussed.

I want dust clouds that block target locks!

You dont. What you do want is a fully featured "radar signature" system that allows for both apssive and active radar modes with varying powers and resolutions, meaning that - passive mode radar is only capable of detecting ships in active mode - active mode ships can be detected at 2x the range even by active mode radar as activly scanning ships are self illuminating. Passive mode ships get a radar signature that diminishes with ship size, and also with nearness to asteroids, dustclouds etc.

I like the cloud idea :P They should be pockets of cloud near the station were you can hide or just sit and relax :P
