Proximity alert

Apr 10, 2004 Sheean link
Modern fighterjets always have these 'gizmo's' that beep if you come too close to the ground, if there is an enemy vessel within radar range, you ran out of missiles or the coffee machine is empty; so why not have it in Vendetta? For example if an enemy craft comes within 500 m of your ship you hear 'enemy vessel nearby'. Or if you are going to slam into a roid within 5 seconds it says something like: 'roid alert!'

Thinking about that; how's about adding some 'voice' to Vendetta? So you can *hear* stuff like: 'battery level critical' (battery almost dead), 'weaponslot 5 out of ammo', 'cargobay full', 'cargo jettisoned', 'critical damage' (low HP), 'shield are at 50%', 'mine timed out' (a mine timed out after 15 minutes).

It would also be kind of cool if your ship is heavily damaged that the voice goes like: 'cri...tical.. da..ge' or when you leave the station 'system activated'. It would make live much easier wouldn't it? :)

The one I'd like most now is some type of warning for when your hull integrity is critically low. It would also be neat to choose from several warning voices. I for one would like the sound of a smooth-talking sexy lady. Any of you Guild Software devs know where to find such a chick to record warning voices from?

=)

PS: No mom jokes please. I know what you're thinking, Incarnate!

I need the "coffee machine is empty" one!

Seriously, great suggestion, Sheean!! I agree with both posts...and a toggle for turning them off.

And, trust me...Arolte's father's wife...oh.....nevermind.

I think a quick blip on the radar would suffice, something that will bring your attention to it but not annoy you.

I like SL's and Sheean's. The radar should flash if you've got an enemy too close or a roid too close. The energy bar should flash if you're low on energy. The weapon should flash if you are low on ammo. And you should have a sexy voice option too.

heh, I've been getting used to flicking my eyes across the screen to check everything (no more sneak up ram attacks for me!) but it would be awesome to have a sexy alert voice.
I would like an alert that told me what type of enemy ship was nearby--trader, n00bie, valk... better than using zoom for those faraway ships, and better for identifying closest enemy type in thick of battle

Now only one question remains, who could do the voice =)

RelayeR volunteers his "Barry White" voice to the effort........for the lady pilots. He wants it made impossible to put on a male pilot's ship! :D

I submit Yomary Cruz for the role. In case you're wondering, she's the one that did the voice of Sheila in Red vs. Blue.

I also thought the voice of the EVA in Command & Conquer (the original) was cool.
The voice of the Terran advisor in Starcraft had a nice aloof robotic, yet human voice as well. That would be cool. Ideally I'd see a different voice for each nation. So Itanis would get the voice of robotic sounding character, NT would get the EVA from C&C, and the Serco can get the terran advisor. Or something like that.

Terran advisor for Serco? Nah, we need some guy growling

"An infidel ship approaches! Arm weapons! For Serco! YAARRGGHH!!!11one"

The Itanis shouldn't get robotic voices, that is too cliché. I think having some "generic" geek do the voice or a more LCARS like voice would be better.

Serco gets the voice of "The Beast" in Homeworld : Cataclysm.

Okay, you think your idea rocks? Let's hear it! Record a sample (if you don't have a mic, go to Radio Shack and buy one. They're 5 bucks or so). I want to hear some sample voice responses!

P.S.: My voice goes all nasal when recorded on a mic. If I somehow manage to outdo all of you, I'm gonna be mighty disappointed.

Well, I just blew my mic up so too bad :P

In a Sci-Fi movie (I think it's Pitch Black, but not sure) there is a computer voice announcing stuff like "Rear stabilizers offline", but it's said SO quick you'll have to watch the move atleast twice to hear what's being said.
At first I thought that was kind of silly, but after giving it a thinkover I've come to this:
Why waste 5 seconds giving a warning that could only take 1?
After hearing it 3 times I'd know what it was saying anyway!

Selection box in settings->audio:
Ship computer voice: None, female, male, fast.
Where "fast" is a cybernetic voice working as described above.

Give me an hour or so til I get home. I've been working on a system in the last few days that's faster than voice. I'll post it!

since the thread is titled "proximity alert"...
would it be nice if ships had mirrors, similar to rear/side view mirrors in cars?
the radars are great, but checking mirrors may be more informative and fun

I like the idea Sheean proposed, just make it able to be turned off. In a high stress environment, the LAST thing that needs to occur are pilots becoming "Combat Saturated" or getting "Sensory Overload" thats how people get killed.

Make it where there are only warnings to flight systems like the following:

"Hull Breached"
"Critical Damage To Flight Systems"
"Low Power"
"Lock-on, Lock-on"
"Proximity Alert, impact imminant"
and maybe
"Fire Malfunction, System Empty"

Dont add too many ones that will distract a pilot...also, allow for an accompaning message on screen. Such as with "Critical Damage..." add a flashing red message on the HUD that says "Hull Critical" and make it flash until the craft goes above a certain %

Overloading the game with Alert Lights and Alarms will lead ultimately to higher pilot casualty rates since the pilot will start listening to the alarms more than listening and watching the battle around them.

Great idea. How about a Control Panel, even, where you could import sounds of your own in addition/to replace to the included sounds, and perhaps even turn selected warnings off? Would surely rock.
