Supply ship

Apr 13, 2004 Demonen link
I once again speak out for supply ships.
How about being able to stick ammo (missiles, rockets, mines) in a cargo slot?

Jettisoning it would leave it in space as any other cargo, possibly with a different color.

That way a group of pirates could take a supply ship along to rearm them and to pick up loot.
It's just a matter of making weapons loadable into the cargo slots.
Let's call the extra money in buying weapons over ammo "space-safe boxes". You do NOT want cosmic radiation detonating mines just as you're about to pick up for a reload.

And once again, we wish you to note, that Guild Software nor the players endorse the act of piracy and are typically a little trigger-happy when we encounter one

Well, It doesn't all have to be piracy. Think about it: when you're fighting in deep space, you run out of ammo. Capital Ships should be able to load ammo as cargo.

-Are we playing the same game here?

Well...
I'm a trader. Without piracy trading is not much fun.
For a while i wished all the pirates would just go away, but the more I think about it the more I like the "trading convoy vs. raiding party" scenario.

Lone traders vs. lone pirates is allso fun, but it's better with escorts fighting the pirates than the trade ships.

Both will, eventually, run out of ammo, but who cares? The supplyship is carrying 200 rockets and 1000 rounds of ammo.

That means the supplyship would need an escort too.

I say: Make it have 32 cargo slots, turn like a slow-motion centaur and be armed like the bus. Acceleration should be 0-200 in one week.

Still, we come back to the inherant problem of the Supply Ship being a weapons transport...

And don't even start about how much good it could do...Tri-Flare Valk Jocks and Pirates are argueing those points...trying to get approval for a design that would simply be used to allow the pirate a longer time away...as he expended ammo the free space that had been ammo filled would simply become stolen cargo space...

The fact is this...A Supply Ship used for good would simply further the annoyance at the dynamic economy as traders wiped out prices faster thus making it harder to get a wide distribushion...

And face it, already the idea of a Supply Ship is folley because as others have said, it wouldn't be an effective combat craft to defend itself against attack. Thus, traders would fly warships to protect the Supply Ship and hence, the galaxy would simply become more and more militaristic with traders being accidentally killed because they looked like an enemy cruiser rather than a cargo runner.

I can see the difference of a valk and a cent from over 2000m away without zooming.
I think I can tell a cargo ship from a cruiser.

It's not about a militaristic universe, it's about protecting the cargo. A fighter escort is allready needed to trade high-risk sectors.

Why would it annoy the dynamic economy?
If I take 4 friends (all of us in mauds or cents) and haul 80 peices of cargo it will cause a drastic drop in the price.
If I take 4 friends in fighters and drive a huge cargoship myself that holds 72 cargo, the others holding 2 cargo each then the impact on the price would be the same.

Only difference is that it could be better defended against attacking pirates.

Then if I jettison cargo into space, and that cargo is ammo, then others should be able to pick it up AS ammo, thus rearming their craft.

But this can't be done in the heat of battle, because the ammo would be explosive. A stray gauss bolt in the cloud of ammo would send the rearming fighter, the cargo-hauler and the ammo to kingdom come.

Okay, what if another EiG guild comes about and starts using these Supply Ships as mobile bases of operation?

They could haul weapons around thus extending Pirate deployment times, cargo could be brought on board and would be hard to stop thus allowing the pirates relative safety in knowing their goods are well protected.

And organizing a 4 man cargo convoy can be difficult. This craft would allow one man to single handedly trash the dynamic economy in any one system after only 2-3 runs. And only that man would make money from it unless he was very generous to his people.

Instead of just dropping the ammo, why can't you make the supply ship big enough to dock in and then make it a little like a station. You can't repair unless the supply ship has "repair parts", and you can't reload without ammo.

-Police guilds would have that opportunity as well you know?

Magus, currently, there are no truely relaible guilds, including my SDF. That said, Pirates have shown in the past, a tendancy to favor small but multipilot hits and then sharing the booty amongst themeselves.

While flying under the espionage pilot [ISS] Griffin I witnessed this behavior several times. Thus, a well balanced pirate force centered around a large craft such as the Supply Ship would be a tough shell to crack since the fighters would be defending only ONE ship instead of defending multiple craft.

Also, the idea of police guilds using the ship to their advantage is folly as well. should a true Law Enforcement guild arrive on scene, they would not need to carry ammo for extended deployment since they would not remain out of dock until their holds were full. They would fly out, conduct the hit and return to base to rearm and repair.

Overall, I must object to a Supply Craft of this size and scale being introduced until some sort of effective anti-pirate system is in effect. The very idea of giving pirates the very weapon they need to travel across the entire universe worries me greatly.
