Different forum engine?

May 12, 2004 Immortal Q link
WHy not use something like phpBB for the message boards, instead of the current thing? I suggest phpBB simply because it's free, I use it myself, and it's easily skinnable - meaning that you can keep many elements of this slick semitransparent CSS thing you have goin' on. Switching to a new forum software would allow for things like stickies, better moderation, user profiles, SEARCHING, and fun all around. Thoughts?

I like the current one, it's less demanding and there aren't any annoying stickies that some of the more annoying users make that you cant get rid of easily (requires Moderator)

also, this system is already in place,

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

These boards are fine for now and the idea of adding more problems to the Devs plate and the fact those problems would prevent use probably for a while isn't worth it.

All these boards need is a search function and an "unread posts" indicator. a1k0n says that the codebase is a bitch to work with, though.

BTW: Don't mention phpBB as a suggestion around a1k0n. I did once, a year or so ago, and he essentially exploded.

I think the current one is fine. Just wish there'd be some type of search feature though. Also, a way for moderators/devs to make "sticky" posts that would prevent important threads from sinking down.

Yeah, a1k0n dislikes phpBB... Meh, works fine for my forum... Then again, it only has 12 users... :P

Yes I agree that a "Search" function would greatly help this forum setup out but again, it isnt that critical since if we're resurrecting a thread and know the name it's not that time consuming just to go through the archives of d00m and find it.

I also like the idea of an everstay thread like FM's "Guides" thread. It would be nice if it were locked in place so that it was at the top every time so newbs could see it and get the general idea of what the Guides are and why it's suicide to make them mad.

as for phpBB, tried it, it didn't work out too well, scrapped it.

/me builds a sandbagged bunker, rings it with Avalon Launchers, and L-mines...hunkers down for the comming a1k0n storm. :P

I like the idea of being able to have sticky posts for things like my "Guides" thread, but rumors of my wrath are greatly exaggerated (and just you wait until I get ahold of you Pyroman_Ace). (8=X

phpBB sucks.
slow piece of steaming crappola.
pages would take 100 times longer to download due to absolutely atrocious html and neverending images.

and of course you could change the skin, however php would still have to parse hundred or so of files EVERY time somebody refreshes the forum page. YUK!

Nothing beats custom built forum to "DO THE JOB PROPERLY".

Actually, phpbb is now standards compliant and extremely quick. Considering that this page is entirely graphics, not much difference. However, it does not seem to suit the devs.

Yeah, took us about a week and a half to retreive all the pieces of a1k0n floating around in s0 and superglue them back together, and it caused a delay of about a month for the release of the upcoming major version. Please, for the greater good, don't mention PHPBB here again!

On the other hand, it did give us a great chance to explore S0 since the devs were so desperate to get a1k0n fixed again that for a week and a half everyone was allowed to enter S0 to help search for bits and pieces of a1k0n floating around, and we got damn good cash rewards for every piece of him we'd haul back to the sector station. Remember the time we were all billionaires, guys? ;)
