for the final version:

May 30, 2004 lunitary link
I just thought of something.
Some of the missions i have done were to collect scrap mettal for a design for a new ship.

So, in order to increase the amount of ships there is in game there could be added for each ship several versions, each will cost more than the previous (due to upgrades or any sorts).

Now, for the trader (or traders) who helped in the development of the ship by cargo transport there will be a special price for the ship he helped.

nahhh, you havent gone far enough.

to get access to the special upgraded ships, you have to complete the missions. eg)

"we are pleased with the work you are doing for us, and have a special job for you. One of our clients has asked us to modifiy his engine suite, and we need the following items. 10 scrap metals, 2 damaged cybernetics, 1 damaged communications, 3 nanite replications units and a piece of high yield xithricite ore. If you will collect these items for us we will modify your engine along with the one we are allready working on for the modest sum of (blah) credits.

Are you interested?"

this provides 2 things.
1. a special challenge (you only get this mission at a station where you have a significantly positive rating (+400 at least?)
2. a limit to the special items in game. since they cannot be purchased normally, but are a random result of taking trade missions (preferrably the quality of the modification is based on yuor trade level) once it's gone, it's gone until you complete another mission.

Of course i'd also like to see some skills that you can use to modify your own equipment, if you have the right stuff (maybe you have to complete a mission to find out the parts list needed) you can attempt to modify your own gear. of course success would be based on your skill level in "mechanic" and a failure by more than a certain percentage would cause your engine to turn into a "damaged engine component" (gotta hate that :) )

mmmm, unique items... definately... that allows for REAL personalisation, and an end to such "best configs" that we see these days.

I believe we're going to see a dynamic economy, and that could extend to the price of ships. Think of it. The cost of your next Atlas would be dependent on the number of free ships given away to newcomers, ships blasted to scrap by nameless pirates.
I like it.

What happens when you die? Death is fast and defeat total in Vendetta... you could spend hours to get that special item and lose it to a lucky flare shot or lag in a few seconds - would you have to redo everything each time?

It would be one thing if Vendetta were like all the other RPGs out there (thankfully it isn't), and death wasn't as common, you could retrieve your body, etc... but I think it might be incredibly frustrating to spend a lot of time to get that heavy cruise engine only to lose it to a pirate before you get a chance to try it out.

And of course, if you are combat oriented, you are going to have plenty of chances to die and lose that special item. So while it does add a layer of depth and rewards players who play often, it is also a ton of work for an uncertain gain. Frustraton kills enjoyment, so you have to balance the two.. this seems to be riding that line.

actually starfisher with the new universe i dont think dying is going to be as common. there should be large areas where you can go to trade and bot while hardly ever seeing a player of another nation, making special items from trade missions more useful. if you want to go to the borders and engage in combat, well, you had better be really good or really lucky. tho perhaps there could be special combat missions for item upgrades as well. "there is a pirate band in sector 186 that has caused us many difficulties as late. if you can find and kill their leader <name> and bring us proof of his death then we will provide you with this enhanced energy generator, boosting your power creation by 5/second when equipped in any small weapons slot."

I like the ideas of doing certain missions giving you certain ships. Like if you do enough scrap missions and take data pads to certain sectors, they would ask you to give the thingy a try
