Feature Request: Real soundsystem

Nov 13, 2004 AlienB link
This has been discussed before, and a thread in the Windows bugsection reminded me. We were told a good while ago, during Alpha that the soundsystem was going to be re-written, and new sounds would be added.

I'd really strongly suggest you take the time to give the game a true surround (5/6/7.1) audio subsystem, which also support the various hardware audio effects such as EAX. Ray said he'd add EAX support if enough people requested it, well, this is the thread.

It'd be nice, but wouldn't something to tinker with ingame be a better start? (Hell, I got a rather long wishlist including threaded loading, cutting cutscenes and whatnot that'd be really nifty, but it all pales in comparison to gameplay..)

I think all of us, including the devs, have a long wishlist. Personally, I think it's proper to prioritize new features which add gameplay depth as opposed to something like audio. I'm sure the devs want to enhance audio when they can.

People seem to think that "surround sound" is the same thing as "3-d sound" which is very much not true.

EAX is (can do) 3-d sound, but 5.1, etc is not required. You can get very good 3-d sound with stereo speakers.

OpenAL is more portable than EAX/A3D, too.

I'd say that they should worry about this a long way off. After all, it'd require an entire rewrite of their sound engine (big job in Linux after all the work they already did) and probably a remix of a bunch of the sounds. That would mean an awfully big patch to stick people with.

I agree.. As long as it's still on the List, I'm fine with waiting a while for better sound.

Yes, I do know the difference between audio effects (EAX) and surround sound. Thanks, but...yeah...

It was directed more to the other thread than your comment, AlienB. To remove all doubt, I wanted to correct a common misconception about what "surround sound" is.

I should qualify my other statement by saying "*Most* people think ..."

Ah..well thanks for clarifying.
