Simple Fix for the Faction Madness

Nov 28, 2004 andreas link
Just make Itani and Serco faction standing mutually exclusive. They sum is always 1000. If an Itani starts to become touchy with Serco he looses standing with Itan. At the same time if an Itani gains standing with his own nation, Sercos will hate him even more. Every gain towards Itani standing is automatically applied negatively to Serco standing. This would fix the problem of UITs homing in Jalik to kill the convoy with a valk in Itani space and then run and hide in UIT space etc.

I agreed with this six months ago, and I agree with it today.

I think you mean they always sum to zero, not 1000. But yes, I am in favor of this.
Nov 28, 2004 Dank link
entirely agree and it makes perfect sense
Nov 29, 2004 Chao link
I'm not sure this makes as much sense for UIT...
Nov 29, 2004 roguelazer link
Why not? If you're helping the Sercos, we don't want anything to do with ya.
Nov 29, 2004 genka link
Ah, but what about me?
I'm rather proud oh my hateful standing with both Itani and Serco...

Anyway, I don't see how this fixes anything. Mostly because I don't see anything needing fixing.

I'd say the sum has a maximum of 0... if you want to you should be able to get -1000 for both factions :D

Although for the UIT maybe the combined standings could have a maximum of 200 or 300 or so. Then a UIT pilot still cannot be loved by both factions, but you can have slightly positive standing with both.

andreas,

I totally agree with you. It's a great way to prevent this faction standing problem from occuring.

However, I would change your idea slightly. I think if someone is hated by both factions, then nothing should stop them from being hated by both factions. I think if someone goes above 0 in the Serco faction, he should at the max have an equal amount of hate from the Itani faction.

For example, if someone is +101 in Serco, that same person shouldn't be able to go above -101 in the Itani faction without negatively affecting the Serco standing.

That way, a pirate should be hated by both factions.

There are many traders/explorer, who like to be welcome everywhere.
Why do you want to kick them out of this game? There is no need for a restriction of love in the universe.
Nov 29, 2004 goatwarrior link
Ok, maybe there could be traders that can be loved by Itani and Serco with the stipulation that if the "trader" participates in the cargo wars (or any future Itani/Serco conflict addons) that the standing reverts to the love/hate pattern suggested in this thread.
Nov 29, 2004 Soltis link
Well, yes.

Making overt moves for or against any of the factions in question should immediately make the trader a 'blip' on the Serco/Itani radar, but as a neutral entity, they should be able to gain faction with both, because they're not "helping" either one, just doing business.

Would there really be a faction problem if the Itani didn't have such a cool fighter? I mean noone gains Serco standing for the Rag...... Maybe if we just introduce oh say a Serco special fighter, trading ship and for UIT a special fighter and bomber, and for the Itani a special trading ship and bomber. Would that work?

First, great post Andreas.

Second, I agree with The Noid's variation on your theme.

this may be more complicated then it's worth, but it's worth mentioning I think:

Faction increases (serco/itani/uit/unaligned)

Serco kills Serco = -/+/Ø/≈
Serco kills Itani = +/-/Ø/≈
Serco kills UIT = Ø/Ø/-/≈
Serco kills Unaligned = +/Ø/Ø/-

Itani kills Serco = -/+/Ø/≈
Itani kills Itani = +/-/Ø/≈
Itani kills UIT = Ø/Ø/-/≈
Itani kills Unaligned = Ø/+/Ø/-

UIT kills Serco = -/+/-/≈
UIT kills Itani = +/-/-/≈
UIT kills UIT = Ø/Ø/-/≈
UIT kills Unaligned = Ø/Ø/+/≈

- = negative faction
+ = positive faction
Ø = no faction
≈ = variable faction

The reason I added variable faction (≈) is that all of the small factions should be able to be increase or decrease by combat as well. If you are clearing out bots in territory that is in or close to there territory THERE faction should increase, you are making THERE space safer for them to travel, this includes corvos/pirates(nps's).

If you look how I did the spread of faction for UIT I made it so that you lost faction with both the faction you killed and your own faction, reason being is that they are a neutral nation. If you as an individual decide to start attacking nations YOU should be held responsible. The UIT I would imagine would distance themselves from someone who decided NOT to take a neutral stance in the faction wars.

Wow, this has become a really complicated feature just to patch some problems with CTC. As a trader or a newbie, I'd hate to try to keep track of all of these conditions. Why not just devise something specific to CTC instead of inventing some wide-spread feature that has to be tweaked for the other features in the game?

I think genka said it best:
"Anyway, I don't see how this fixes anything. Mostly because I don't see anything needing fixing."
Nov 29, 2004 goatwarrior link
There is definitely something that needs to be fixed...

A Serco can gain faction points with the Itani causing them to be able to enter Itani space and attack the Itani nation convoy. If you try to defend the Itani convoy by destroying the Serco, then you lose 800 points of standing with the Itani government.

Obviously, this is something that "needs fixing"
Nov 29, 2004 NoAddedSugar link
not really. A player could only attack the convoy in enemy space _once_ and will lose his standing points at once.

If this player will do this a second time, she/he have to bot thousands of bots in enemys space. hours of work.

Nobody will do that just for _one_ transport.

I agree with genka.

I've seen someone do it, so it definitely does happen.
