I wasn't hinting that they were "lazy." I stated that they tacitly allowed Celebrim's challenge only to discourage it as soon as it became serious; viz.:

LeberMac:
> Basically the devs replied to my query with: "Knock yourself out."

... meaning, if I interpreted it correctly, "Do it by yourself if you really want to, but we're not interested in helping you out." That's actually quite different from "laziness." That's more like deliberate discouragement because they really don't want to see planets in the game. I then suggested that since they had tacitly allowed the challenge while there wasn't a serious contender, that they should merely continue to allow it now that a serious contender had finally appeared. That seems more consistent.

Agreed, the practical problems remain. Nevertheless, since LeberMac is offering to answer the challenge after all, why not let him? If he succeeds, then maybe he could find some way out of the dilemma. If not, then at least he will have tried.

I never offered to accept the challenge myself; I merely defended LeberMac's acceptance of the challenge (which the devs' tacitly accepted also). But if LeberMac asks me to help out, I will.

hi, new here, 3dmax & photoshop certified with game editing experiance,..

this challenge sounds easy..

I could make all the texture feature tilesets blend seamlessly into each other at all 4 edges, etc. blah blah

someone from another game community told me to come read this thread.

quote:
"So even if LeberMac succeeds (and that would be a wonderful achievement), there are still significant rendering problems to be overcome and so we would probably not see Cruithne making an appearance any time soon. "

whys that?^ the game is locked down & no way to put it in?
please explain above quote in detail in laymans terms

I could easily make all these planets in the challenge .. is there some incentive like a year or 2 of free gameplay?

I normally dont play MMOG that are pay as you play,.. but this game looks really cool! ;p

anyways, wondering if this is still a relevant thread & if people want me to make these..

You wouldn't believe how much flak I took in-game (including from my own guild!) for standing up for LeberMac and trying to give him a chance! Everybody (except LeberMac and I) seems to be convinced that planets are either a practical impossibility (and hence not even worthy of serious consideration!), or that they would ruin the game!

There may well be practical issues at stake here, but if people are willing to experiment, let's see what we can do for now. At least that's better than not even trying....

If you really wish to help out, please don't let the crowd discourage you (especially if LeberMac really wants to give this a try).

I don't have 3D editing experience, but I do have a vivid imagination and decent writing skills, together with a Computer Science degree from Yale focusing on the design and analysis of algorithms. If you need me to help out with algorithmic design and analysis, I might be able to help out in that area....

Supertard, mabye you and LeberMac should get together on this...

cool! I'm going to download the game tonight & check out the file structure tomorrow & then.. I will have some questions like what file format you want me to export the 3d stuff to. etc.

mostly engine restrictions & guidelines.. ya know..

maximum texturemap size, max polygons per planet, maximum amout of texturemaps per planet, etc etc..

Great!

Regarding the rendering, I mean that a genuinely-modeled planetoid filling 2/3 of a player's screen at minimum spec http://www.vendetta-online.com/h/faq_tech.html should perform at acceptable framerate as the player swoops, rolls, and turns.

I may be vastly underestimating the powers of the engine. It is my experience, however, that the current asteroid fields strain the GPU of some players. It is also my experience that "fake" planets (i.e., massive spheres that are merely "skinned," where you aren't allowed in the game to get close enough to see the fakery) can produce severe performance hits depending on end user kit.

This should not stop anyone from constructing planetoids. I only wish for the builders to have reasonable expectations about their potential appearance in game.

There already are planets in the game. Stations tend to orbit them.

If you want a planet that a player can land on and have it look even pretend remotely realistic, the engine does not appear capable of it at the present time. If you're looking for a really big asteroid, which seems to be what Celebrim was challenging the userbase to make, you're still stuck with a game that was designed to run on low end systems.

I'm not sure what people are looking for in planets. I mean, think about it. Adding them in would add about five minutes of "cool" factor before becoming just like stations (something you dock at and largely ignore) and take six months to create. Is it really worth it?

This is where people fire off random stuff like fighting in the atmosphere or driving yourself into a dock. That would add maybe 30 minutes of "cool" factor, and take a further year to develop. Is THAT worth it?

Okay, this has probably gone on long enough. We can all probably agree that:

-Some users would like to see some ability to interact with planets, and would like to see this sooner rather than later.

-Some users feel that this would not be a good use of resources at the moment.

-Other users would like to assist the devs in creating planet models. Thier names can be found in the this thread, should their services be needed.

-Some have pointed out that making models for VO is not as simple as some might believe.

I think that pretty much covers it. I'm going to lock this now. If the devs can use the services offered, they will check this thread. Please read the In Progress wiki when it is made public. I think you will see that there is a well thought-out plan. The devs have brought us this far along in seeing their dream come to life - lets give them a little credit.
