Bounty and the Little Guy

Dec 09, 2004 softy2 link
Hey,

First, thanks for the update.

Ok, there are issues with the bounty system that are discussed elsewhere. In summary : I agree with Celebrim that the XP loss is not the problem, it's the Botting Treadmill that's the problem. But still, I think losing levels is a bad idea. Pirates are FUN to play with and play against, and they are not griefers (they are "griefers" as much as serco players grief itani players). It'll be boring for space to be safe, and everybody is happy and roses are red...you get the idea. Some characters are of course annoying, but they add colour to the universe. (Btw, I am not a pirate, so don't scream at me for being biased. :)

Anyway, I am writing this for the Little Guy. Which is the low level, poor traders who gets pirated. Now, these are the easiest victims to pirate (unlike, like Chao and his uberMaud), but with no money to post a bounty.

My suggestions are as follows :

(a) Let small poor players contribute money to a "Get XXX fund", and when enough money (say 1M) gets collected, the bounty gets posted. This will at least let the poor defenseless trader a chance to "let steam off", which would definitely help the atmosphere of the game.

(b) Put a cap on how much a single person can contribute to teh "Get XXX fund", say 50k. This will stop the "grudge bounty", wher e a trader with 5000M can essentially abuse his money to get another player. Also this cap is more realistic : bounties are placed on repeated offenders, not single one-shot pirating action.

Anyway, at the end of the day, it's a game. We all pay the same 10 bucks per month, so let's enjoy it and don't take it too seriously :).

These ideas would seem to work better than most of the others I've heard so far. That way bounties would only be put onto the heads of people that grief a LOT of people, instead of killing one person with enough money to put up a 100,000,000cr bounty...although the story should probably be different for the "illegal" bounty system....

From Incarnate:

"The Individual bounties were kind of an addendum, which may be temporary once the Illegal Bounty System is in place."

In other words, this may all be a moot point shortly.

Most of the discussion seems to be on the player-initiated bounties, but the plight of the n00b trader will probably be handled by bounties imposed by nations and corporations who notice their interests being interfered with.

I find it interesting that the other active thread suggests that people have way too much money and that bounties will be posted willy-nilly.

Again, we need to live with the feature for several days in order to see how it actually works. There is WAY too much speculation.

Very good ideas.

I also like the idea of the player having to pay only half the bounty, and the pirate having to pay the other half(sort of an involuntary copay thing).

This is how I see this working in conjunction with Softy's idea:

Pirate kills/annoys 10 people. They each contribute 50K to a fund that goes toward the pirate's bounty. The bounty is then put into effect as a one million credit bounty, payable to the bounty hunter, with the remaining 500k being extracted from the pirate's account at gunpoint.

No possible way for the pirate to profit from dying deliberately; makes a bounty easier to place for the 'little guy,' and makes the bounty hunter rich.

Of course, illegal bounties might work a little differently... and I like the idea of bounty hunters having no political protection in reaction to their 'hired gun' status...

Well, it is a "Suggestions" Forum.

Maybe. But letting a n00b player "let off steam" and feels he/she is *participating* can only makes the universe more immersive.

People do have WAAAY too much money. Ask Chao. I don't trade, and only trade to make money for my combat ships. But i have a half a Mil sitting in my accounts, and with a couple of hours more I could easily make 1/2 M more. There are older threads where people are trying to figure out how to *get rid* of their money :).

I think the general consensus is, when lots of speculation happens, that something is broken. I think something is broken, and I think most will agree with me. After all, isn't this the "Suggestions" Forums?

have fun!

Well the problem isn't that people have too much money.... It's that we don't have anything else to spend it on. This will be resolved once cap ships are put in the game or supposing that the devs add more ships and weaps and higher level stuff. The highest level ship that I know of requires level 13 trade. I've got level 11 light weapons and i'm using a weapon that was available since .... i think level 4? (neut III's) How about adding a neut IV ??? This way when the serco/itani participate in the CTC they have a little more incentive. Then again alot of players say the Neut III is unbalanced so this is probably a bad idea.
