ion storms (weather advisory)

in the news it should have a weather report about sectors effected by ion storms and or travel advisory

well, my first thought was "no, that would make it too easy to avoid them". but then i had a slightly different idea that would give players something more to do ingame:

why not have a player organization that monitors ion storms? this organization would require a bot that would sit somewhere (probably UIT space). members of the organization could message it with the coordinates of known ion storms, and it would maintain a small database. players could message the bot with the name of a system, and it would respond with the coordinates of known ion storms within the system.

the bot would need to periodically expire reports (perhaps ignore any reports more than half an hour old? how quickly do ion storms move?)

this system would not provide perfect information, as it would depend entirely upon players, who are imperfect :) so there would still be an element of risk.

the organization should really be a guild, come to think of it - the guild council would be responsible for making sure that no member is submitting bogus reports in order to mislead other players, for example.

why not just be able to send a /stormupdate "System X, Sector X" string to the console and it updates your nations "News" section. But would only actually put it there if the server varified it to be true, that way there is no false info spread.

I was thinking, that you can only look up storms in stations, and stations will only provide data on that system only.

because unless i'm much mistaken, News are only available from within stations, and if i'm out in space trying to avoid storms, not terribly useful.

on the other hand, if the server verified all reports (thereby creating a weather report that was 100% accurate), why not simply make ion storms show up on the map? that's too easy. there should still be risk. the usefulness of the weather advisory bot should be directly proportional to the efforts players put into keeping its database current.

the more i think about this, the more i like it. i would be glad to send in storm reports (though i spend most of my time in UIT space and grey space).
