"," in money

I'm sure some of you will think this lame but can we please have "," in the money display, ie. 1,000,000 instead of 1000000, especially when it's 1364827, it gets hard to tell at a glance how much you have. This should be extremely easy to add and not take up much dev time at all. I bring this up because I have a few friends that play and are constently telling me they have x amount when they actually have y amount.

Except then they'd have to localize the whole game. Because while in America "," is the separator between groups of three, in many nations "," is the separator between normal and decimal.

I dont' care if it's "," "." ":" "-", anything is better then nothing, besides, we do not have decimals of money in VO, you missed my point completely rogue.

And I'm sure there is a universally accepted norm considering that we share scientific information between nations on a constant basis with no problem. Quite being negative.

You missed his. You might wonder why you had some crazy date as your credit balance if they used dots to seperate it - and this begs the question: Why do you need to tell at a glance how much money you have? Is it really that much work to just take the extra second to figure it out? You should have a rough idea from just playing your character, and the only time this is an issue is when you have so much money that it won't matter if you make a mistake reading how much you have.

Your both being dumb here, why not just display it correctly instead of f'ing with stuff that's been being used for hundreds of years a "universally accepted" form of displaying numbers. Again, I do not have a problem reading my numbers, I have friends that do, and if they are having issues then there is a problem. This is not someting that really needs debating. What if it's a little kid and he's just learning how to read large numbers, what if it's someone who has a learning disability and needs the indicator to help him figure it out, not everyone is a super genious with a programming degree, displaying numbers the way that they usually are instread of some halfass way to me makes more since.

@John... no there is no standard. It is not uncommon to see scientific articles from europe with the decimal points in as separators.

@rogue... most operating systems provide standard ways for you to format money, or at least determine which character to use. It really shouldn't be to hard to determine it from the client machine and display it properly.

There is a reason we use this format at all and it has to do with being able to tell how much money you have. It's a lot easier to look at $1,234,567 and know you have about $1M, whereas 1234567 requires some effort to decode every time (which makes for a poor user interface).

Overall, I think there are much bigger interface issues to fix than this one, but it could be a quick fix.

@Furious: Most operating systems are localized. However, Vendetta does not use any localization method. The strings are hardcoded into the binary. So they'd either need to use something like gettext to provide localized versions of the strings in a separate .po file or they'd need to come up with an in-house method. Although for one character, it could probably be done in-house, their GUI code is supposed to be very, very ugly.

@John: You're not being realistic. While in America or England a young child would learn to read 1,000 as one thousand, that doesn't mean it's the same the world over. In France, Hungary and Sweeden, " " is the separator. In Germany, Portugal and Spain, "." is the separator. I'm also somewhat surprised by your use of aggressive language, personal attacks and swearing. I see no reason why this should be a heated discussion...

@Rogue
because your being overly difficult and against something that's only going to be a benifit, has no negative effect to the game and yet you still nay say it. Just backup! I dont' care, use dots or colens, or whatever [RUDE- DELETED]you want, just put something in. I resent the fact that I have to suggest things to the community all the time instead of to the devs, which is why I'm being agressive. I could care less what YOU think of my idea rogue.

That's nice.

Calm down y'all.

John maks a valid point, three digit seperation would make it more readable.

You all have valid objections, internationally the dot & comma are used differently, and because VO has an international audience could be more confusing.

I'd suggest using a blank space as the seperater. I have seen it at least as a proposed international standard, and as far as I am aware does not have the ambiguity associated with a dot or comma. So it would be "1 364 827".

<trader> *how much? can you put thousand separators please?*
<pirate> *eehhh... wait... 30,000... or die!*
<trader> *30,000? do you mean 30 000 or 30?*
<pirate> *by space! are you French or Swedish or what?*
<trader> *don't insult me, man! and sorry, no separator, no money*

I expect the only thing that will come of this thread is that a certain thread starter will get a stern talking to, and maybe, if we're lucky, a temporary ban from the forums.
Gosh, that'd be nice.

Edit:
While normally I wouldn't mind the modification suggested, the presentation of this idea makes me detest this useful-sounding change with all my being. I will be rather disappointed if the idea is implemented after-all.

OK, Sun's right, we'll never get players to agree on using/what to use for seperators.

As far as the actual game using seperators, the suggestion's out there & if the devs think it's worth however much time it would take, then they'll likely do it.

So can we please be quiet on it now?
Jan 28, 2005 Furious link
The space is a fine compromise, but it really wouldn't be too hard to do it right.

"Give me commas or give me death!"

Well, death might be easier.
Jan 28, 2005 johnhawl218 link
again, you all are argueing over something I'm not, I don't care what is use, I'm just looking for a seperator, I'd be fine if it was set in the German form or the Iraqi form or the japanese form, just any form would be nice.
