Auto-aim

Feb 27, 2005 KixKizzle link
Currently when using auto-aim I turn it on/off alot. When dueling a person this can mess up a duel. I say "mess up" as in making me press another key :) Maybe I'm just lazy but I think it would be cool if we could adjust our auto aim a bit. No, no I'm not talking about the aiming itself.

So this is my suggestion:
When aiming at a target let the player have a preset auto aim turn on/off point.

For example:
When I am within 150m of an object (bot/object, doesn't matter) my auto aim is turned on. When I am within 150 - 300 auto aim is turned off. When I'm 300-infinity (even though some guns only have 600 range) it is turned on again.

This could be set for each gun or ship that we have and would increase customization. I think this is important because everyone wants more of it! If it's too difficult or would mess the whole equilibrium of the game up then oh well. It would be cool though.

Oh yeah. If this could be put into a bind/alias or something of the like then could someone with the skills please do so? I'll give you 2 credits!

The problem with such behaviour is the inconsistency in the games behaviour, which is a generally unpleasant thing.

"why does my aim turn yellow sometimes and sometimes not?"
"why doesn't shots waver even when the aim is yellow?"

Other things that come to mind as being more important are the grouping fixes (tracking when pri weapon is a rocket and sec weapon is gauss, fex...)

Wow first post and already:
"The devs have more important things to do."

I like the idea kix. It makes sense. As long as it could be turned off if you don't want it to do that.

Or bind the mousewheel to turn it on and off. The roll will still do zoom or whatever you have it bound to, but the actual pressing of it will toggle autoaim.

That's a far better solution (and one you can do yourself, right now) than having the devs add something in so you don't have to think about it. It's really not all that hard to click it on/off.

And the grouping fixes WOULD be more important, because the autoaim is worthless if it's not aiming in the right direction. Who cares if it's on or off if it's not going to make you hit anyway?

"Who cares if it's on or off if it's not going to make you hit anyway?"

If you know how to use auto aim, it's good.
For Ex: When attacking tycorps (pressing "a" "e") you aim to the top right hand corner of the targeting reticule because it shoots the weapon down more.
vs.
Aiming middle and in towards the tycorp and having the shot miss.

Auto aim isn't crap, and if you can have it automatically switched on when your closer to the target your guaranteed a higher chance of hitting the target. When your farther away though, auto aim starts becoming crap.

That's why I suggested this.

Kix, read starfisher's post before replying to it. He's talking about when you have multiple weapons that don't travel at the same speed, and therefore would like to have different targeting reticules.
I agree with starfisher, fixing grouped weapon's auto aim is more significant. Distance isn't the only thing that determines if you should have auto aim on or not, maybe if all you do is botting. Certainly speed of your weapon, speed of your target's ship, size of your target's ship, and wether or not your target is turboing all play a large role in when auto aim wants to go off or on. Therefore it's not a very good candidate for something to automate.

I did read his post Eldrad. Not sure why you think I didn't....

"maybe if all you do is botting."
And I don't see how this would benefit botting. You don't need to turn auto aim off to hit bots. This is specifically for pvp. All those variables that you pointed out could also be tweaked.

Then again it's not gonna happen. I'll just go bind the auto aim to my mouse wheel. Making it automated or just a feature that you can adjust probably is too "un-important"

I didn't think you had read it because your responce doesn't address what he said.

In PvP there are more variables that effect when you would want it on or off than are reasonable to automate, not to mention there are some that can't really be quantified, like "how they are dodging" (not dodging at all, simple barrel roll, more effective strafe switches, etc).

Ok, well I didn't want to account for all those variables in the first place, or make automatic aiming any more accurate.

I just wanted it to switch on and off at different distances from the enemy, which would be configurable by the players. Besides I'm not good enough at pvp to have any other preference for those variables other than distance from enemy.

Maybe when I get more experienced I'll understand more.
