Ban trash-talking/personal flamewars in channel 100

Feb 28, 2005 fprefect link
I'm not sure if this is already banned and the ban is lightly enforced, but channel 100 has really suffered in recent days from trash-talking between individual players which in several cases has escalated to all-out flamewars. For example, player A will get destroyed in a fight by player B, player B will post "who's your daddy," "lol pwned," or some variation in 100, player A will then accuse player B of using cheap tactics or will claim that B would have lost were it not for lag/intervention by another player/etc., and the situation quickly escalates into a flamewar.

This has several negative effects:
- It spams the channel and diverts from actual game discussion;
- It creates an atmosphere of hostility that puts off newbies and existing players alike;
- It increases the amount of griefing and other negative trends.

Although I realise that it can be difficult to draw the line between this and the sort of friendly rivalry that adds flavor to the game, it seems clear that something needs to be done. I am sure that our guides are capable of monitoring the situation more closely and handing out mutes/warnings on a case-by-case basis, if they are given a freer hand to do so. Of course, I might have it completely wrong and guides can already do this, in which case I'd just encourage them to take a somewhat harder line. There's no reason such discussion can't be taken to PMs or another channel, since it only involves the two players in question.

I'd have to disagree completely. Personally, I feel quite restricted as it is now. You say one joke and the call for /mute is already being discussed by players and /msg's are sent out to the guides. Everyone needs to just grow a thicker skin a bit. OR, /ignore those you don't want to listen to, OR, change the channel in which your listening to. The sensorship in this game in boggling compared to other games. Having personally been muted without warning from a guide (who shall remain nameless), I have a little to say on this subject.

Guild Software has set up a situation where players are suppost to be at war with each other, attacking red or blue, with skattered deaths of gold. And at the same they want everyone to play nice and be friends. I think this is a bit unrealistic. You can't have conflict and friendship at the same time, they interfere with each other. There is always going to be hot heads, and flared tempers, that's the nature of vendetta. And all the whiny, flower sniffing duelers out there I'm sure are typing there flamed responces now as they see this. =P

The policy as it stands now is that the following are NOT permitted in-game, regardless of who started it or why: verbal abuse in the form of profanity, racial, ethnic, or sexual slurs. We're talking real-world ethnicity here - you are free to malign the Serco/Itani/UIT so long as you avoid the other prohibitions. Pilots might try working their hostility out using hot plasma, or by speaking in character: "Your Itani mother wears combat boots!", "Your UIT mother wears combat boots - which she purchased RETAIL!", or "Your Serco mother fails to wear combat boots." Failing that, there's always logging off until the anger subsides.

The chat filter is there for those who do not wish to see general profanity (that is, profanity not directed at people - verbal abuse is always probibited). Pilots are requested not to attempt to "fool" the filter.

I sometimes ask pilots to take it to another channel if they are really getting into it, but it would be difficult to adequately draw the line to ban/mute for "trash-talking". I hate unenforceable rules.

If you feel that there is a problem with a particular guide, please email the devs directly. They get a printout of every guide action taken and are able to pinpoint the action in the logs for further review.

Wow. I am amazed.
Some of you may already know that I am not usually a very nice character. I am spiteful, mean spirited and misleading, among other things. And yet, I seem to have far less trouble with being muted ect than 'contributing' members of the community. I wonder why this is.

Anyway, back on topic. No, I don't think trash talking should be banned. It'd be too much work to monitor all that bull. Plus, if you were to ban the majority of conversations in 100, it'd get pretty damn boring.

fprefect, if the conversation on channel 100 is bothersome, leave channel 100. It's really that simple. I do it all the time.

I thought the Itani, Serco, and UIT were nations, not 'ethnicities'. Especially the UIT.

leaving 100 works well, I was having some serious enjoyment without 100, I come back to 100, and get into a flamefest, heh. /me leaves 100

"Ethnic" can relate to people sharing a common national or cultural background, but can also include race.

"TOASTEROS 1.0 IS THE FASTEST!"

Perhaps, but TorchOS has better hardware support and customizability.

Same here, I never have #100 on. Messes with the atmosphere imo. I'll stick with #11, sector, guild, group and private chat.
