Windows 7 sound problems

I'm using the Vista driver b/c the WAV one doesn't work at all. Whenever there's a new sound (like a weapon firing, or engaging turbo) it damps out the background sounds by a large degree. Makes it feel like my ears are turning inside out.. Any way to make it stop doing this?

More info would be nice, like what sound card you have, have you tried the latest drivers? or are you just using the ones that come with Win7?

Anyway, here is something you can try (although I thought they had fixed this):

Click Windows Globe > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Speakers (Might be called Front/Rear Audio, depending on setup) > Properties.

In the new window, if you have an enhancements tab, goto it and make sure all boxes are UNTICKED, and that the setting selection is on NONE. Then goto the Advanced tab and change the sample rate to 24bit, 44100 Hz (Studio quality), make sure BOTH boxes in the exclusive mode section are ticked, and then click OK.

If this works, cool, if not then well, errm, you can always use the *reset to default* button on the advanced tab to undo any changes you made.

Oh, and by *I thought they had fixed this* I meant Microsoft, for some reason they enable some *normalise plugin by default on some soundcards that use their built in driver. Also I dunno whats going on with some soundcard drivers for Vista/Win7! Why would they try to resample on the fly in software when most soundcards can do it on the hardware dsp in xp?

:mind boggles:
