graphics performance on OSX

Ok, it's obvious that there are some problems with the videodrivers in OSX.
I was wondering, what if we ALL send a polite mail to apple asking them to improve the drivers in their operating system. I can imagine that this isn't good publicity for their systems (a wintel box with more or less the same hardware outperforms the mac) and that they actually might wanna take a look at it.

/me points to Mac OS X 10.4
I'm using an internal release of Tiger and its graphics performance in Vendetta Online is quite a bit better than even 10.3.7. (~300fps instead of ~100fps)
Once Tiger's released, upgrade. Your computer will love you.

I have a emac 1.25 Ghz G4. 768megabyte of ram, an ati 9200 with 32 megabytes of on card video ram. Will 10.4 improve vendetta graphics on that?

Dual 2GHz G5, 3GB RAM, Radeon 9800

Game runs fine unless I turn on full screen glow effect, then it gets bad in certain areas with lots of clutter, which it should never do considering the spec of the machine running it.

@macguy: The Radeon 8500 (9100/9200), 9000, and 9600 (9700) drivers were much improved, and low-VRAM cards in general get increased speed. It doesn't deal with low amounts of RAM as well, but with 768MB of "real" RAM that shouldn't be a problem. :P

"Game runs fine unless I turn on full screen glow effect..."

yes but i'm not turning it off again, it looks so good. I run the game now in 800*500 allmost full detail and glow on a iMac G5 1,8
I'm realy willing to sacrifice some resolution for that sweet sweet glow here.

Same here. I'm playing at a measly 800x600 because of that sweet, sweet glow.

Maybe I'm just too new, but I've got an iMac g5 and have turned the resolution all the way up as well as the glow and all effects are on. I think it looks and plays awesome...

Is there anywhere that will tell you what kind of frame rate you're getting? I didn't see a setting for that.

type /fps in the console/chat window. It will display the frames per second in the upper left of ths screen. type /fps again to turn it off.

Cool, Thanks!

Solra, so with 10.4, with my specs, vendetta will run better, graphicly?(sorry if i'm stupid and i didnt get the answer out of what you said)If so, how much better?
Feb 05, 2005 roguelazer link
He said you'd get an improvement in all graphics performance. I would assume that nobody could know how much, since 10.4's drivers all have debugging code present and are thus slowed down somewhat versus what they will be after release.

Dual 2 ghz 10.3.7 30" 2560 x 1600 res. All I can say is AWESOME!!

I look foward to the 10.4 performance increase

I think we all do. It should speed up this 1.25 Ghz emac :)

10.3.8 was just released with updated drivers to improve glow performance in WOW. Maybe this will improve the glow in VO too.
Feb 09, 2005 macguy link
wow, 10.3.8 wont mount disk images anymore! error number -536870208

Never mind, used mac janitor and repaired disk permissions, it works now. So, has 10.3.8 fixed anything that may help vendetta?

I just installed the update on my 12" PB. I saw no improvement in FPS. Turning on Shaders still drops my FPS down to around 30, turning on Glow crushes it even more. Mind you I haven't tried tweaking it much, and the nVidia chip in this machine simply may not be able to cope with the nicer effects. Shaders and Glow off is perfectly fine though.

i suddenly play at 1152*720 high res textures, rest verry high and glow. Used to be 800*500. Great!

Solra, discussing the big cat not unlike those in Bengal is contrary to any non-disclosure agreements you are into.

For example, say it were the case, I couldn't say that in build "height A three six nine", I get 80 fps in a center of a roid field at 1600x1050 32 bits resolution with maxed out details and full screen illumination turned on on a Radeon 9600 card (in a dual 2Ghz G5).

That's 40% better than in 10.3.8.

So, if you want to discuss big cats, be careful as how and what you say it.
