VO on Zaurus ?

Oct 08, 2006 nioubi link
I wonder if I could run VO on a Zaurus.
There are ports of doom, quake and heretic.
The thing is that it would mean compiling for arm architecture, and certainly GL/SDL problems.

Doom, Quake, and Heretic aren't 3D games. They don't use OpenGL. That's why they work on the Zaurus, which has neither hardware nor software OpenGL support. VO requires 3D support, as it is a 3D game. It might be possible to compile Mesa for the Zaurus and run VO that way, but mesa takes a lot of storage space and runs slow even on a fast system. It would be essentially unusable. Never mind the fact that you'd need to figure out some way for the x86 binary to run on whatever processor the Zaurus uses...

You'd be better off running VO on your desktop and VNC-ing in from the Zaurus. Higher framerate. :-D

Thats like me asking for an arm binary for my ipod! Never gunna happen, no matter how far the hotdog (a spin off SDL for the ipod) gets!

I was searching for through the forum and stumbled upon this topic.

Considering that this game requires hardware accelerated OpenGL, perhaps it would be possible to port it to something like the OpenPandora:
http://openpandora.org/

I personally preordered one of them and have spent much time fiddling with Linux on small devices (I have got it running on my Treo 650 and also my IPAQ). It would be awesome to VO on the openPandora, and you would likely have a large generated interest...as well as supporting a great open-source hardware platform!
